Global Pattern and Your Case Study Research

Time 1:00 to 3:00 PM (1300 hrs to 1500 hr)
This Assessment Task is designed to cover some of the important aspects of the topic of Economic
Activities--Tourism that we have studied and will study over the remaining month or so. We should have covered these topics in class and the superior scholars will have conducted independent research to expand upon the topics. You will have 4 or 5 questions in the examination and an extended response or essay. One of the short answer questions maybe a series of multiple choice questions. The extended response or essay will be based upon A research Task--A Case study of a Tourist Operation. (NOT
Perisher Blue! Another Tourist Destination. I will put one on the Wiki. Do Not leave this until the last minute!
Here are 11 short answer questions 5 of them will be selected from this list.
1. Look at the map of Global Tourism, Tourist Flows, or Business Firms (one of these).
Describe 2 factors that account for:
Either-- a. the movement of tourists from A to B (eg Mongolia to Australia)
b. more tourists going from region A to region B tather than going to region C
c. The number of business firms located in NYC, London, Paris, Tokyo
2. Look at the table (on of those table in your notes)
a. How many tourists come from A going to B
b. Identify 3 developing countries
c. Assess the reason for tourism creating a greater impact the economy of country
A as opposed to the impact on the economy of country B.
d. Discuss the impact of tourists from Country A on the either the society, the culture, or the biophysical environment of Country B.
3. Explain 3 ways in which changes in technology will affect the pattern of global tourism.
(be sure to consider past and future patterns, be sure to consider transport, and communication, an other aspects of technology.)
4. Using only one of these factors - culture, society or environment
Explain How this factor will affect the pattern of global tourism.
5. Describe one of these patterns of business organization --Horizontal integration, vertical integration or diversification. Demonstrate how this enhances the importance of large firms influencing the global pattern of tourism. Discuss one way in which it might just give small scale firms a way to link with global operations.
6. Outline the role of politics and governments as a factor influencing the pattern of global tourism.
7. Explain how the stage of economic development might influence the relative importance of global tourism to the economy of a country or a region of a country .
8. How does the Global Tourism differ from Domestic Tourism.
Consider frequency of trips, duration of stay, cost, barriers to movement, friction of distance, cultural conflicts, political impacts
Now one of the following questions will be in the Assessment task. They are based on an article on the
Impact of the Global Financial Crisis on Global Tourism. This is a recent article and indicates how the superior scholar is up to date with the latest trends in economic activities and patterns in Geography.
Read the Article and prepare a short answer question on the following. Only one will be in the assessment task.
9. Describe 3 impacts of the Global Financial Crisis on Global Tourism.
10. How might wars in the middle east affect global tourism? Give 3 reasons for the impact of wars or conflicts on tourism activities. You might use your knowledge of the middle east to assist in this question
11. Describe one reason why the tourism industry suffered more than other industries as a result of the Global Financial Crisis.
Remember to consider the pattern of global Tourism.
Research ANOTHER tourist operation. I will put one up on the Wiki. You may use the library to research another tourist operation. You may use text books, study guides, or other references. You should really have 2 tourist case studies. We will do Perisher Blue in Class. YOU MUST DO
ANOTHER CASE STUDY . IT IS CALLED RESEARCH. If you use Perisher Blue you may only get
8 marks out of 20 as you have not properly answered the question.
