Collaboration between & STAFF & RESOURCES BACHELOR (Hons) COMPUTING PROGRAMME STAFF DEVELOPMENT STRATEGY INTRODUCTION Kolej Shahputra recognizes the importance and value of the development and training of staff and the development of academic practice in enabling the college to fulfill its mission and achieve its strategic objectives. It is committed to the support and promotion of relevant development and training for all categories of staff. This strategy highlights key development priorities for KSP staff over the next three years and provides a framework for discussions and decisions on the most effective use of existing resources for staff development across KSP. PRINCIPLES OF STAFF DEVELOPMENT The College is committed to the staff development in enabling them to become more effective in their work The College is committed in providing development opportunities to all staff level The College is committed to the provision of development on a continuing basis Staff Development activities are subject to the same review and evaluation of all other College activity STRATEGIC OBJECTIVES OF THE STAFF DEVELOPMENT STRATEGY This strategy has five main objectives which are: (a) To provide a framework for allowing appropriate development opportunities that are designed to improve the knowledge, skills and behaviours of staff which will enhance personal growth and effectiveness of individuals, teams and the College in the pursuit of excellence in all of its activities and strategies. (b) To facilitate the process of change to enhance organizational competitiveness and the ability to adapt to a changing environment. (c) To promote a culture developmental (d) To outline various staff development support plans for each institutional strategy (e) To embed all staff development activities into the college academic calendar. ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITY FOR STAFF DEVELOPMENT Responsibility for staff development occurs at three levels: The College - Staff development is an integral part of the College's strategic planning process. The college recognizes that institutional excellence can only be achieved and maintained by appropriately skilled, experienced and motivated staff. Therefore the College has the responsibility to: (a) resource staff development and require Faculties/Schools and Management Departments to provide developmental plans as part of the Academic and Financial Planning Process. (b) monitor and review the institutional spending on staff development activity (c) establish performance indicators against which Faculties / Schools / Departments and individuals can be measured. (d) identify and provide selected and targeted development activities supporting each institutional strategy and the overall Corporate Plan Director of Academic (DA), Heads of Programme (HOP) and Chief Operating Officer (COO) These college leaders are required to ensure that staff are provided with the necessary opportunities in accordance with the following; (a) New members of staff receive a thorough induction into their working environment i.e. attend College Induction. Identify staff development needs for individual members of staff and the Faculty /Dept. (b) Implement all Staff Development Plans within their areas of responsibility, or new areas and within the constraints of available resources allocated. (c) Manage the release of staff to participate in approved development activities. (d) Encourage performance improvement by providing formal and informal feedback on performance and by using such techniques as coaching and mentoring. (e) Establish objectives for all development to aid the evaluation of the impact and Individuals - All staff have a clear responsibility to develop their skills and knowledge as a means of enhancing performance in their current and future roles. Therefore, staff are encouraged to: (a) Plan and take ultimate responsibility for their careers (b) Identify their needs through constructive use of appraisal and consultation with their line managers (c) Seek opportunities to improve skills and knowledge required in their current positions (d) Highlight to line managers if and where objectives are not being met as a result of insufficiently developed skills and knowledge INSTITUTIONAL PRIORITIES The priorities listed below emerged from the consultation of senior members of staff within the institution. Discussions will be needed to further refine these priorities, reflecting the time and expenditure to be devoted to each over the next six months to one year. These will have impact on and be impacted by the level of available institutional resources. Supporting staff in the professional development of lecturers and researchers To develop clearly articulated development pathways for all staff across all categories who have a teaching and / or a research role. This should be linked where appropriate to newly agreed criteria for promotion and reward. Supporting staff in the context of a changing IT environment Given the impact of ICT on all Kolej Shahputra activity and our future dependence on computers, all staff will be supported to keep updated in their knowledge and skills of IT development which affect their respective areas of work, be it in academic or non academic roles. Supporting staff in the marketing of the institution To develop a structured approach to the development of marketing skills, customer relations and communication skills for staff in all categories at all levels in accordance with the newly developed institutional marketing strategy. Supporting Staff in Technology and Knowledge Transfer To support staff in all their activities in relation to technology and knowledge transfer. In particular support is required in the development of consultancy skills and knowledge, understanding of Intellectual Property and the impact of its management on the university.
