The Crucible Final Project During our study of The Crucible we have explored the lengths people go to in order to cover up a mistake, the idea of guilt by association, and whether it is ever justifiable to witness injustice and do nothing. In conjunction with our study of Salem, 1692 we have explored McCarthyism and studied the parallels between the two which show us that the events of The Crucible are possible in any place or time. Now it is your turn to create a work of fiction exploring and updating these same ideas. Here are your choices: #1. You are to write a scene of a play or a chapter of a short story reflecting several of the main ideas in The Crucible. YOU DO NOT NEED TO WRITE AN ENTIRE PLAY. Instead, summarize all that comes before the last act, and then create the last act or conclusion of your play. Please include as many of the following questions as possible while keeping your scene cohesive and meaningful. What effect does fear have on people and on society if allowed to go unchecked? How do people behave differently in groups then they would acting alone? To what extent are people defined by the choices that they make? What determines who is powerful and who is powerless in a society? Can past wrongs be transcended or risen above? Is redemption possible? What is the difference between cautious, paranoid and hysterical behavior? Is guilt by association ever justified? When is it acceptable to make people prove their innocence? When is it ok to witness injustice and say nothing? What lengths will people go to to cover up a mistake? Include several parallel characters. The characters do not need to be exactly the same as the characters in the play but they must serve the same purpose. #2. Compose a formal 3 to 5 page essay exploring how two of the questions above are explored in the play The Crucible, and then how they exist in the world today. Provide ample quotations to support your claims. A separate rubric will be provided for this assignment.
