American “Cultural Imperialism” and Latin America (pp.46-53) “Cultural imperialism” is an influential theory that appeared in the 1960s. It explains why and how the United States dominates the world with its cultural advantages. Latin America is the region flooded with many American cultural products. As a result, Latin American scholars have long been holding a critical view towards “cultural imperialism” from the United States. Latin America can hardly resist the cultural invasion from the U.S. But “cultural imperialism”, which is different from the notion of “Americanization”, cannot explain why the region of Latin America is in a process of being “Americanized”.
