Erin Chandler Period 5 2/20/09 The Enduring Chill The Story the Enduring Chill, By Flannery O’ Connor is a short story about a young adult who encounters an illness, and thinks he is going to die. With the help of his family and friends, they can help him through this hard time with love, advice, caring, and friendship, to save his life. The setting takes place in a town called Timberboro, where Asbury’s mother and Sister Mary George live. There house is located on a farm in the middle of nowhere, with horses, cows, and chickens. In the beginning of the story Asbury is currently living in the downside of New York, but because of an illness sends him home to live with his mother and sister. In the story Asbury moves away from home seeking to find a new life. He becomes a writer and artist, and tries to become successful, but fails. So the last few months he lived in New York he would just sit around and starve most days he didn’t have money, Until one day he got ill, and it just seemed to get worse, so he decides to move back home with his mother, and Sister. His condition becomes worse, with the help of his Mother and friends they will help him get through his sickness. In the story the Enduring Chill, The main characters are Asbury, His mom, and Asbury’s sister Mary George. In the Enduring Chill Asbury comes to live at home after living in New York for awhile. He is ill and can’t pay the bills, or survive on his own any longer. His mother helps him, and gets whatever he needs, and will satisfy him so he can stay at home. His Sister Mary George is a School Principal Who doesn’t care about Asbury and thinks he is faking his illness. Erin Chandler Period 5 2/20/09 Asbury thought his life was ending, and it was all up to his family to give him love, and support to get him through his illness. By moving back to timberboro with his mother, she helped him get through his illness by being able to talk to a priest and see a doctor. What also helped him was being able to see the friends he hasn’t been able to see or talk to in awhile. And after the doctor visited, he realized that it was only the flu, and that it would never kill him. By moving back to Timberboro he has become healthy, and sees the world in a whole new perspective.
