The Seeing Eye
Annual Report 2014
Cover
The cover is set up like a four-by-four checkerboard, with squares of various colors. In every other
square is a photo of a smiling Seeing Eye graduate with his or her dog. Across the center of the
checkerboard is a dark green bar with The Seeing Eye’s logo, a German shepherd in harness guiding a
person. You can only see the person’s left leg and left arm. To the right of the logo is The Seeing Eye, and
below it the words “Independence & Dignity Since 1929.” To the right of the logo reads The Seeing Eye:
Annual Report 2014.

On the Cover: Eight of the 246 Seeing Eye teams you helped to create in 2014. Photos by John Keane.
Thanks to you, The Seeing Eye created 246 new Seeing Eye teams in 2014, a 7.5 percent increase from
the previous fiscal year. These men and women, coming from across the United States and Canada,
ranging in age from teenagers to senior citizens, and with diverse occupations and interests, are now
pursuing their goals with enhanced mobility, independence, and confidence. We hope you enjoy some
of their stories contained throughout this report.
Letter from the President and CEO of The Seeing Eye
Photo: This story has a photo of Seeing Eye President & CEO Dr. James A. Kutsch Jr. and his Seeing Eye
dog, a German shepherd named Vegas.
After several years of transition, 2014 was a year of moving full speed ahead… and there’s nothing more
thrilling for a student at The Seeing Eye than to move full speed ahead – to pick up the dog’s harness
handle and give the command, “Forward!”
Our renovations are complete, and in 2014 – for the first time since 2011 – all of the year’s classes were
held at home on our Washington Valley campus. Fittingly, 2014 also was our 85th anniversary year, and
we celebrated on May 16 with a gala held inside the Main House and under a giant tent on our lawn.
More than 250 people – graduates, donors, volunteers, and friends – were treated to a puppy parade, a
farm-to-table dinner, live music, and silent and live auctions. Awards were also presented to three
individuals who have demonstrated an extraordinary commitment to our mission. This event, our first
gala in 10 years, raised approximately $400,000 in support of our mission.
Other highlights of FY 2014 include:






Two-hundred and forty-six Seeing Eye teams graduated.
We received 523 applications and accepted 288 candidates into our program. (Some candidates
accepted in 2014 will attend in 2015.)
We continued our follow-up support for our 1,737 actively working Seeing Eye teams, with
Seeing Eye instructors conducting follow-up visits to Seeing Eye graduates in 41 states, Puerto
Rico, and six Canadian provinces.
At our Chester breeding facility, 551 puppies were whelped from 73 litters, with an average
litter size of 7.5 puppies. The success rate for dogs that returned to campus from their puppy
raising families and went on to graduate from the program or entered the breeding program
was approximately 75 percent, allowing us to train only the very best dogs, and to find the very
best match for each of our students. We have 511 families in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and
Delaware participating in our volunteer puppy raising program.
After a two-year absence due to our renovations, Family Day returned to The Seeing Eye campus
on August 9 with approximately 1,450 puppy raisers in attendance. The Seeing Eye awarded
scholarships to 49 puppy raisers who plan to attend college. There were instructor
demonstrations, talks with Seeing Eye graduates, and presentations by Seeing Eye staff on the
history of the guide dog harness, veterinary aspects of puppy raising, and insights into traffic
training.
On January 22, 2014, New Jersey Governor Chris Christie signed Dusty’s Law, named in honor of
Seeing Eye puppy Dusty. Dusty was attacked by a loose dog and the trauma he experienced
necessitated that he be dropped from our program. The Seeing Eye Advocacy Council worked
for several years to bring attention to the problem of guide dog teams being attacked by loose

and/or uncontrolled dogs. It is now a criminal offense in New Jersey to kill, injure, or interfere
with a service animal, guide dog in formal training, or a young puppy being raised to become a
guide dog. The law defines penalties for violators and requires restitution for medical bills, the
cost of retraining or replacement of the service animal, and lost wages. But, more importantly,
making attacks and interference a criminal offense ensures a police response to assist a blind
person whose guide dog has been injured.
In June, the Vincent A. Stabile Canine Health Center was again accredited following a
comprehensive evaluation by the American Animal Hospital Association. The evaluation,
performed once every three years, included a quality assessment review of the hospital’s
facilities, medical equipment, practice methods, and canine health care management. The
Stabile Center provides veterinary care to all puppies and dogs in The Seeing Eye program.
The covered student patio, not formally part of the 2012-2013 campus renovation project, was
completed in 2014. Use of the new area, which allows for practice of the crucial off-leash recall
command, is now a component of every class.
The Seeing Eye Orientation and Mobility Program held 17 seminars on the campuses of
participating colleges and universities, giving approximately 150 orientation and mobility
students an understanding of how guide dogs could benefit their future clients.
Public visits to our campus (which had been suspended due to renovations) resumed on March
6. The public is welcomed to make reservations and visit on Thursdays and one Saturday per
month. The visit includes videos, talks by a graduate and an instructor, and a history of The
Seeing Eye. In 2014, 1,300 people attended 27 visits (an average of 48 individuals per visit).
The Seeing Eye kept in touch with other blindness, guide dog and animal-related organizations.
In July, members of The Seeing Eye staff attended the National Federation of the Blind
conference in Orlando, Florida; the American Council of the Blind conference in Las Vegas,
Nevada; the annual meeting of the Council of U.S. Guide Dog Schools in Chicago, Illinois; and the
bi-annual international seminar of the International Guide Dog Federation, the global
accreditation body for guide dog schools, in Tokyo, Japan, where I had the honor of being
elected to a two-year term as IGDF chairman.
Our online presence increased significantly as we nearly quadrupled our Facebook followers
from 25,000 to more than 90,000. The Seeing Eye’s Facebook page, at
www.Facebook.com/SeeingEye, has pictures and stories about our graduates, dogs, and
puppies.
Our 85th anniversary year was truly a historic one thanks to your generous support. Thank you for
helping to enhance the independence and mobility of people who are blind or visually impaired through
the use of our amazing dogs.
Sincerely,
James A. Kutsch, Jr.

Letter from the Officers of The Seeing Eye
Photos: This letter is accompanied by photos of the Officers of The Seeing Eye: Peter N. Crnkovich,
Thomas J. Duffy, Margaret E. Howard, and James A. Kutsch Jr.
Dear Friends:
When Morris Frank returned from Europe with Buddy and incorporated The Seeing Eye, Inc., on January
29, 1929, he could not have imagined what the world would be like 85 years later: Smartphones with
built-in GPS apps, access protections afforded by laws like the Americans with Disabilities Act, or the
worldwide success of the guide dog movement itself… all tremendous improvements for people who are
blind or visually impaired.
But over those years there have been some new challenges too, such as nearly silent electric cars, the
decrease in mass transit outside of urban areas, and the risk of interference posed by unleashed or
unrestricted dogs.
It’s amazing to think that, 85 years from today, it will be the year 2100. We can’t imagine what the world
will be like in 2100 any better than Morris could have predicted the world of today. But thanks to the
steps The Seeing Eye has taken over the last three years, we do know that we will be here to breed and
train the world’s best guide dogs.
At a 2011 strategic planning retreat, The Seeing Eye’s Board of Trustees endorsed a three-pronged
strategic plan to ensure our long-term success. The first, completed in Fiscal Year 2012, was improving
our cost structure without reducing the number of people served or the quality of service; the second,
modernizing and upgrading our campus, was completed in 2013. We are halfway through the final
element – our five-year capital campaign for the endowment. We are already at 91 percent of our goal
to grow the endowment to the point that a 5 percent draw will cover half of our annual costs.
As the Officers of the Board of Trustees, our responsibility is to ensure The Seeing Eye will be here for as
long as people need Seeing Eye dogs. The steps we have taken, and your generous support, means The
Seeing Eye will be ready to face whatever challenges the future holds.
Thank you!

Graduate Story
This page has a large photo of a German shepherd puppy sitting inside a harness. Today the harness is so
big he can fit inside the handle, but one day he’ll be big enough to wear it while guiding someone! Inset
into the larger photo is a smaller photo of a young woman, smiling as she stands next to a black
Labrador retriever. They are one of the Seeing Eye teams pictured on the cover. Below the photo, the text
reads: Juanita Woodcox of Phillipsburg, New Jersey, graduated from The Seeing Eye with Ophelia in
September 2014. The black Labrador retriever is her first Seeing Eye dog. “Ophelia has changed my life,”
she said. “I’m able to go places I never thought I could go before. We just came back from a wonderful
trip spent in New York and also went to Canada. My dog is always there for me. I feel very safe, secure,
and independent with her by my side. Ophelia is a wonderful partner and the greatest thing that could
have ever happened for me to be able to improve my independence!”

Graduate Story
This page has a large photo of a smiling Seeing Eye student walking on the leisure path outside The
Seeing Eye, being guided by a golden retriever in harness. She is wearing a black sweater and long pants,
and there’s a key card around her neck on a lanyard. There are just a few leaves scattered on the grass.
Inset into this larger picture is a smaller picture of a man smiling and tilting his head back as a black
Labrador retriever licks his chin. They are one of the Seeing Eye teams pictured on the cover. Below the
photo, the text reads: Blaise Bryant of Albany, New York, was paired with his first Seeing Eye dog in
September – Flash, a black Labrador retriever. “Having Flash has given me an increased sense of safety,
independence, and companionship…as I tell him many times a day, he’s such a good boy!” Blaise said.
“He’s always very happy, even when the weather this winter has been everything except tolerable.”
JACK HUMPHREY SOCIETY
($1,000 - $4,999)
The Seeing Eye’s first instructor and geneticist, Jack Humphrey trained Buddy, the first Seeing Eye dog,
and Morris Frank, the first guide dog user. This Society honors him and all the Seeing Eye instructors who
have followed in his footsteps.
This page has a photo of a yellow Labrador retriever, in harness, lying on the floor between two pairs of
feet – two people having a conversation while the dog waits patiently for their next adventure. This page
also has a photo of a smiling man in a checkered shirt standing next to a German shepherd with her ears
erect and her head slightly tilted to one side, as if to say, “Take the picture already!” They are one of the
teams pictured on the front cover. The text below the photo reads: Dr. Lloyd White of Marshall,
Minnesota, was matched with his first Seeing Eye dog in 1959; in 2014 he returned for his seventh, a
female German shepherd named June. “June gives me the freedom to run errands, go for coffee, and in
general lead a normal life,” Lloyd said. “We walk from 25 to 40 miles per week, and she is wonderful!”

Note to reviewers: These brief stories about people who graduated in FY2014, with accompanying
photos, will be interspersed throughout the Annual Report. We may not have room to include all of
them.
Aylieh Xaveriss of Duncan, British Columbia, graduated with her first Seeing Eye dog in September -Wendy, a yellow Labrador/golden retriever cross. "Having a Seeing Eye dog changed my life by giving me
the confidence I need to be more independent," she said. "I am learning to trust myself more now, and
feeling I have a true friend and an angel in my life. Because that is what Wendy is to me, an angel, and I
am very grateful every day to have her in my life."
Charlie MacDonald of Halifax, Nova Scotia, came to The Seeing Eye in December and was matched with
a German shepherd named Peaches, his fourth Seeing Eye dog. Charlie, now retired, was a civil engineer
in the Planning Division of the Nova Scotia Department of Transportation and later served as Executive
Director of the Nova Scotia Disabled Persons Commission. “I went two months between Seeing Eye dogs
and you find obstacles you never knew existed. There’s quite a few dented parking meters around town
that I’m responsible for,” he joked. “These dogs just take you right around things without ever breaking
stride. The first time I worked with one, it was like someone had turned the lights on. It was just magic.”
Christina Moore, who is studying psychology at Houghton College, was matched with a female black
Labrador retriever named Onyx in July. Onyx is her first Seeing Eye dog. “Onyx has changed my
perceptions of travel, helped me find confidence within myself that I did not believe I had, and most of
all, she has encouraged me to try ventures I never thought I would be able to attempt,” Christina said.
“Her presence as a guide is very valuable and I will never take for granted the blessing that being able to
attend The Seeing Eye and receive this beautiful Labrador has had for me. Not only is she my guide, but
she is a gift from God that I cherish and know far too few receive.”
“Getting a Seeing Eye dog was the best decision I've made so far in my life,” says Daisy Russell, a high
school senior in Saugus, Massachusetts. “Having such a happy, smart, well-trained guide dog like Mandy
has given me so much more confidence and independence, and has helped me become more social as
well. I have had the confidence to do things like travel into Boston with Mandy solo, with Mandy guiding
me perfectly on the bus, train, and the busy city streets in the middle of the rain, which is something I
have never even done with my cane on my own before, both because I wasn't completely comfortable
and because I wanted someone by my side – even someone with fur and a wagging tail.”
2014 Events
For the fourth straight year, The Seeing Eye and the New Jersey Devils teamed up for a Seeing Eye event.
On March 8, Seeing Eye staff and puppy raisers greeted Devils fans inside the Prudential Center in an
event that raised both money and awareness for The Seeing Eye. We even have a puppy named N.J.,
named in honor of the Devils’ mascot! There were demonstrations of how a Seeing Eye dog navigates an
obstacle course and of course plenty of opportunities to hug our puppies!
There are three photos. The first shows a yellow Labrador retriever puppy sitting on center ice in a
hockey arena. A woman stands on the left and a man stands on the right, each wearing a red, black, and
white Devils jersey and holding a hockey stick.
The second photo shows Seeing Eye instructor Jan Abbott being guided by a yellow Labrador retriever
through an obstacle course set up on the concourse of a hockey arena. There is yellow police tape to
either side and there are orange cones ahead. The dog is confidently navigating as a crowd watches.
The third photo shows a woman in a red, black, and white Devils jersey crouching to pet a chocolate
Labrador retriever in a green Seeing Eye Puppy Raising Program vest. The puppy’s raiser is standing
behind the dog holding the leash.
The photos are credited: Photos by David Shapiro.
Family Day returned to The Seeing Eye campus in 2014 in grand fashion, with approximately 1,450
puppy raisers in attendance! Family Day is our opportunity to thank all of our puppy raisers, whose love,
patience, and selflessness exemplify The Seeing Eye’s mission. Also at Family Day, The Seeing Eye
awarded scholarships to 49 puppy raisers who plan to attend college. Puppy raisers also spoke with
instructors and graduates, seeing firsthand how their generosity and dedication helped put “miracles
into motion.”
This page has three photos: The first is a Seeing Eye graduate with her golden retriever, husband, and
young son, holding a golden retriever stuffed animal, on the lawn. The second shows Seeing Eye
instructor Lori Nagler smiling as she hugs a German shepherd against her body. The final photo shows a
little girl with her face painted to look like a dog, complete with tongue hanging out, and wearing a Tshirt with three puppies and “The Seeing Eye” below it, inside the Main House at The Seeing Eye.
The photos are credited: Photos by John Keane.
Puppy Raiser Outings
Seeing Eye puppy raisers take their puppies on many outings, which helps teach them not to be afraid of
new places, situations, and people. Puppy raisers go to baseball games, shopping malls, museums,
parades, airports, and other places where crowds, loud noises, and other challenges are sure to be
found.
This page has two photos. The first shows a black Labrador/golden retriever cross on a pier looking at a
huge aircraft carrier. The caption reads: A black Labrador/golden retriever cross named Howard looks
through a metal railing to check out the U.S.S. Intrepid, the decommissioned aircraft carrier that serves
as the cornerstone of the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum Complex in New York City.
The second photo shows puppy raisers assembling to march in the parade, holding a banner that reads
The Seeing Eye. Morristown, New Jersey. Independence & Dignity Since 1929. Seeing Eye puppy raisers
(and puppies) at the Morris County St. Patrick’s Day Parade held in Morristown, New Jersey.
Gran Fondo
Nearly 2,000 riders participated in the fourth annual Gran Fondo New Jersey, held on September 7. The
event raised more than $50,000 for The Seeing Eye. The bicycle tour offers four spectacular routes
through the beautiful Highlands region of Northern New Jersey. Four Seeing Eye graduates and six
Seeing Eye employees rode in the event, and a total of 75 riders used the ride as a Seeing Eye fundraiser.
This page has three photos. The first shows a woman in a Seeing Eye bicycling jersey and a helmet
smiling as she leans over to hug a golden retriever puppy. The second photo is a yellow Labrador
retriever in a Seeing Eye Puppy Raising Program green vest. His tongue is hanging out of the side of his
mouth. Behind him there are people riding on bicycles. The final photo shows a man and a woman, each
wearing a bicycle helmet and a Seeing Eye bicycling jersey. The man is looking on as the woman points at
a map showing the Gran Fondo route.
GRADUATE SOCIETY
Any Seeing Eye graduate who contributes to the annual campaign becomes a member of the Graduate
Society.
Photo: This page has a photo of a woman in a white shirt with blue stripes laughing as she hugs a
German shepherd in harness. Hilda Fair of Niagara Falls, Ontario, returned in August for her seventh
Seeing Eye dog -- a German shepherd named Darly. “Darly goes with me to my volunteer position at the
CNIB Store in St. Catharines every Thursday. She is such a wonderful ambassador as she lies under my
desk and behaves herself very well,” Hilda said. “All of my Seeing Eye dogs have been great, and I will
always return to The Seeing Eye.”
Photo: This page has a photo of a man in a red shirt, smiling proudly as he stands with his arm around a
golden retriever in harness. “I should have gotten a Seeing Eye dog 30 years ago when I first lost my
sight,” said Kent Plemmons of Clyde, North Carolina. Kent graduated from The Seeing Eye in September
with his first Seeing Eye dog, a male golden retriever named Reilly. “Reilly has replaced my former travel
and mobility anxiety with easy confidence and joy. My trainer, Joan, and my entire experience at The
Seeing Eye were far beyond my highest expectations!”

Graduate Story
This page has a large photo of a golden retriever in harness sitting in front of a garden with yellow
flowers. Inset into the larger photo is a smaller photo of a graduate smiling as she stands next to her
Seeing Eye dog, a yellow Labrador retriever. They are one of the Seeing Eye teams pictured on the cover.
The words below the photo reads: “Words cannot begin to express what a joy it is to have Zappa in my
life,” says Melissa Roe, who is pursuing her bachelor’s degree in English and her master’s degree in
special education at College of the Desert in Palm Desert, California. Zappa, a yellow Labrador retriever,
is her first Seeing Eye dog. “From the moment his head eagerly dives into the harness, traveling
becomes a breeze, and I’m confident with my amazing guide leading the way. Whether we are
traversing the college campus, or rolling around on the living room floor, he never ceases to amaze me
with his unending love and loyalty.”
Graduate Story
This page has a large photo of a black Labrador retriever in harness. Inset into the larger photo is a
smaller photo of a graduate smiling as he stands next to her Seeing Eye dog, a German shepherd. They
are one of the Seeing Eye teams pictured on the cover. The words below the photo reads: Dr. Edwin
Staudt III of Aldan, Pennsylvania, was partnered with his first Seeing Eye dog in 1992; he returned last
year in February for his fourth, a male German shepherd named Ronan. “The best part of being blind is
the special relationship with a dog that I would not know without sharing every day with these
extraordinary beings,” Ed said.

85th Anniversary Celebration
These pages have photos taken at The Seeing Eye’s 85th anniversary gala. On the first page are three
photos. The first shows Seeing Eye President Jim Kutsch speaking on a stage with his Seeing Eye dog, a
German shepherd named Vegas, lying on the floor near his feet. The second shows a woman closing her
eyes as she kisses a German shepherd puppy. The third photo shows a woman with a wide smile as she
lifts an inquisitive Labrador retriever puppy toward the camera. The caption reads: Photos by Ron Wyatt.
On the second page are five photos. The first shows a man smiling as he holds a yellow Labrador/golden
retriever cross puppy. The caption reads: The Honorable Thomas Kean, former governor of New Jersey,
smiles as he holds a Labrador/golden retriever cross puppy.
The second photo shows a woman smiling as she holds up a yellow Labrador retriever puppy, and
another woman leaning forward to scratch under the dog’s chin. The caption reads: Seeing Eye
volunteers Susan Gnall, left, and Kay Crnkovich meet a Seeing Eye puppy in the Morris Frank Room
during the gala.
The final three photos are the award winners holding up a yellow Labrador retriever puppy. The caption
reads: Donna Chambers, Hugh D’Andrade, Esq., and Warren Casey, Esq.
The Seeing Eye celebrated its 85th anniversary with a gala at our Washington Valley campus on May 16.
More than 250 people attended, and we raised approximately $400,000 in support of our mission. The
event started in the Main House and then, led by a parade of Seeing Eye puppy raisers and their
puppies, guests went outside for a “farm to table” dinner under a giant tent. Items were auctioned off in
both silent and live auctions, and there was live music, a heartwarming video about our mission, and an
awards presentation.
At the gala, three people were recognized for their extraordinary commitment to The Seeing Eye’s
mission. Hugh D’Andrade, Esq., was presented with The Seeing Eye’s highest honor, the Dorothy
Harrison Eustis Humanitarian Award. Hugh was a member of the Board of Trustees from 2000 through
2012 and remains an honorary trustee; he retired as vice chairman, chief administrative officer of
Schering Plough Corporation. The Dorothy Harrison Eustis Award, named after our co-founder,
recognizes individuals who have the vision, the persistence, and the generosity to make the world a
better place, without seeking recognition.
Donna Chambers, a long-time volunteer and member of The Seeing Eye Board of Trustees from 2002 to
2013, and Warren Casey, Esq., who has been The Seeing Eye’s general counsel for more than 35 years,
were each honored with the Buddy Award, presented to individuals who have demonstrated an
extraordinary commitment to The Seeing Eye mission.

Graduate Story
This page has a large photo of a Seeing Eye graduate walking on the leisure path while being guided by a
yellow Labrador/golden cross. Inset into the larger picture is a smaller picture of a woman smiling as she
stands next to a black Labrador retriever. The caption under the photo reads: "Gale isn't a dog -- she is
my seeing eye," said Layla Carrillo, a resident of Orlando, Florida. She came to The Seeing Eye in June
2014 and was matched with Gale, a black Labrador retriever who was born three days after Hurricane
Sandy struck New Jersey. “She has made my life easier. Now that she is here, I could never imagine my
life without her. She is a part of me."
Graduate Story
This page has a large photo of a yellow Labrador retriever, in harness, looking off to the left with a
serene expression on her face. Sitting in front of her are two puppies, a black Labrador retriever and a
golden retriever, also looking off to the left. Inset into the larger photo is a smaller photo of a Seeing Eye
graduate smiling with one arm around her Seeing Eye dog, a yellow Labrador/golden retriever cross. The
caption reads: Betty Edge was partnered with her first Seeing Eye dog in 2014 – Nero, a yellow
Labrador/golden retriever cross. “I have never known such responsibility and love, and I believe Nero
feels the same responsibility and love toward me,” says Betty, a retired model, massage therapist, and
antiques dealer living in Dallas, Texas. “It was worth all the hard work!”

Janice Drake travelled from Birmingham, Alabama, to attend The Seeing Eye’s 85th Anniversary Gala in
May 2014. While in Morristown, Janice toured The Seeing Eye campus and met many of the staff
members. When she saw the instructors at work in town and the pristine canine clinic, she was sure that
her contributions to The Seeing Eye were very well utilized. Janice has created an endowment fund to

said Alyse Simon of Brick, New Jersey, who was matched in 2014 with a golden retriever named Lark,
her third Seeing Eye dog. “She gives me independence. Because of her I go places and do things I never
dreamed of. Lark is my companion and she protects me. I feel safe with her. Lark has taught me to love
unconditionally. It is amazing how much she loves me. It is great to have Lark to depend on me as I
depend on and trust her.”
BUILDING FOR OUR FUTURE CAMPAIGN
Through their generous support, these individuals, corporations, and foundations will help ensure The
Seeing Eye will be here as long as people who are blind or visually impaired need Seeing Eye dogs by

Veterinary Recognition Awards
This page has a photo of a yellow Labrador retriever sitting calmly and looking off to the right.
Behind him is a beautiful lake with many boats docked. The caption reads: Photo courtesy of 4
Paws to Freedom Seeing Eye Puppy Club, Hunterdon County, New Jersey. Each year, The Seeing
Eye receives nominations from our graduates and puppy raisers for our Veterinary Recognition
Awards. These veterinarians, and many others who remain unnamed, have gone “above and
beyond” as they provided extraordinary service and care to Seeing Eye dogs in all stages of their
lives.
Our puppies, our dogs-in-training, and the Seeing Eye dogs working with their owners all
benefit greatly from the generosity of these veterinarians and their staffs.
