Babylon was the great city of the ancient world. It was the capital of the kingdom of Babylonia and of
two Babylonian empires. Babylon stood on the banks of the Euphrates River near the modern city of Al
Hillah in Iraq. This location helped Babylon become an important trading post. The city also served as the
religious center of Babylonia; the word ‘Babylon’, means gate of the god.
Records first mention Babylon about 2200 BC. King Sumuabum, the first important Babylonian ruler,
founded a dynasty in 1894 BC. The best-known king of that dynasty was Hammurabi, who ruled from 1792
to 1750 BC and became famous for developing a wise and fair code of laws.
Interesting Facts: The period from 5000 to 500 BC was an age of considerably important new
technologies. The wheel, metal tools and weapons were developed at this times. Coins were also first
used, and writing and mathematics were developed during this period. Babylonians also began to study the
stars.
