Internet Use Policy - Happyhansel School

Happyhansel Primary School
At Happyhansel Primary School, pupils are encouraged to develop their
understanding and use of the internet. As well as providing a rich source of
information, the internet is increasingly becoming an essential tool for
learning. To enable pupils to develop these skills, the school is equipped with
a computer network system through which children are given access to the
internet under staff guidance and supervision.
The school’s computer network incorporates a filtering system provided by
Shetland Islands Council to minimise the possibility of unacceptable sites
being accessible to school users. However, it must be recognised that no
matter how rigorous the filtering we can never guarantee with absolute
certainty the complete elimination of all unsuitable material. It is therefore
essential that teachers and parents make every effort to educate our children
in their responsibilities regarding acceptable use of the internet and e-mail.
Teaching and non-teaching staff may also be required to access the internet
and make use of e-mail in the course of their professional duties.
It is
therefore important that all staff only use the internet in accordance with the
school’s policy, and that while at school they do not access the internet or
make use of e-mail for any unauthorised purpose.
Parents, pupils and staff all have a responsibility to ensure that use of the
internet and e-mail is carried out in an acceptable manner. Therefore:

The following principles will form an integral part of the school’s policy for
acceptable use of the internet.
Parents will be responsible for:

ensuring that their children understand and comply with the school’s
requirements for acceptable use of the internet and e-mail.

setting and conveying acceptable standards which their children should
follow in making responsible use of media and information sources.
Staff must:


images which may appear on the school’s website or elsewhere on the

shall have the right to withdraw an individual’s access to the school’s

School and will be reviewed annually by them. Any member of the school

Parental agreement to school’s acceptable use policy, and rules

use of internet by pupils
Dear Parent
As you may be aware, the National Curriculum requires pupils to develop their
ICT skills by learning to access the internet and to use e-mail. To help ensure
that this is done as safely and responsibly as possible through supervised use
of the school’s computer network, we have drawn up a policy for acceptable
internet access. As part of this policy, you are asked to give permission for
your child to access the internet at school under staff supervision.
In the course of using the internet with pupils, school staff will make every
effort to ensure that children are properly guided and supervised, and that
they only use the internet responsibly and in accordance with the school
policy for acceptable use. We also ask parents to support the learning
process which takes place at school by accepting responsibility for:
 ensuring that their children understand and comply with the school’s
requirements (set out on the accompanying sheet) for acceptable use
of the internet and e-mail.
 setting and conveying acceptable standards which their children should
follow in making responsible use of media and information sources.
Would you please sign, detach and return the slip on the accompanying sheet
to confirm your acceptance of the school’s internet use policy, and to give
your agreement to your child’s use of the internet at school in accordance
with that policy. Please retain the top part of the sheet for your and your
child’s reference. The complete policy is available for inspection at school. If
you would like a copy, this is available from the school on request.
Yours sincerely
