Whereas, the curse of the Bambino has haunted the Boston Red Sox,
torpedoing its World Series aspirations, since the team sold ace pitcher George
Herman “Babe” Ruth to the New York Yankees in 1919, and
Whereas, on October 16, 2003, just when it seemed the curse was over, the
Red Sox Nation could only sit and watch as Aaron Boone became the latest
Yankee to renew the common saying “wait ‘til next year,” and
Whereas, in the closing weeks of 2004, the Red Sox compiled a remarkable
42-17 record to reduce a 10-1/2 game Yankees’ advantage to as little as 2-1/2
games, and
Whereas, all of these stunning late season victories guaranteed the Red Sox
a postseason slot for the second consecutive year, and

Whereas, the ball players from Bean Town swept their first opponent, the
Anaheim Angels, in three games, setting up the coveted rematch with their
arch-rivals, the New York Yankees, and
Whereas, past history was revisited as the Red Sox lost the series’ first three
games and were trailing in the eighth inning of game four by a score of 4-2,
and
Whereas, with Yankee set-up man Tom Gordon on the mound, the Red Sox
offense sprung to life when David Ortiz slammed a homerun, and
Whereas, with no time to spare, Red Sox pinch-runner, Dave Roberts, stole
second base and came around to score on Bill Mueller’s single to tie the game
at 4-4 and force the game into extra innings, and
Whereas, the Red Sox bullpen did its job by not allowing any runs in the
next three innings, and
Whereas, in the 12th inning, with a runner on base, David “Big Papi” Ortiz
hit a homerun into the right field bullpen for a stunning Red Sox win, and
Whereas, game five was another endurance contest, lasting until the 14th
inning when David Ortiz’s heroism prevailed as he batted home Johnny
Damon from second base, sending the series back to Yankee Stadium, and
Whereas, in game six, the Red Sox sent Curt Schilling to the mound for a
performance that will become Red Sox lore, as he defeated the Yankees 4-2
despite his right ankle being temporarily sutured and his sock bloodied, and

Whereas, in the decisive seventh game, Johnny Damon drove in an
American League championship series’ record six runs, and Bosox Derek
Lowe pitched an impressive evening of baseball as the Red Sox completed an
improbable and unimaginable comeback to earn a chance at the World Series
crown, and
Whereas, David Ortiz was named the series’ most valuable player in
recognition of his on-field heroics, and
Whereas, the Red Sox then faced their World Series opponents from 1946
and 1967, the St. Louis Cardinals, confident that the new century would prove
kinder to their cause, and
Whereas, the team’s dream of winning its first World Series since 1918 was
realized due to the productive bat of World Series Most Valuable Player
Manny Ramirez and the pitching of Derek Lowe who won an unprecedented
third playoff clinching victory, and
Whereas, three days later, approximately three million people lined the
parade route in Boston to cheer on their heroes, who had now truly
accomplished the “impossible dream,” now therefore be it
