A Resolution Regarding the Ownership of Biological Materials 1. Whereas: Past scientific research tendencies relating to biological materials have been to 2. discriminate against those of certain races, lower socio-economic, and gender status; and 3. Whereas: much of our current advancements in science are based on the controversial collection 4. of biological materials against the knowledge and consent of the individual as 5. evidenced by the HeLa incident; and 6. 7. 8. 9. Whereas: scientists and researchers, not the owner, often receive royalties and recognition for the sale and advancements of aforementioned biological materials; and Whereas: the right to ownership, or at least informed consent, reduces potentially questionable scientific trials, experiments, and other arenas; and 10. Whereas: current disclosures for consent are not necessarily easy to understand or are practical in 11. all situations; 12. Therefore, be it resolved by this Palm Beach Catholic Forensic League Student 13. Congress here assembled that: individuals ought to retain control of their biological 14. materials.
