Dear Parents,
During the summer, students fail to continue reading. Reading on a daily
basis is essential to a child’s success in school. To ensure that your child continues
to work on reading skills, I am requiring grades 9-12 to keep a summer reading
journal as well as read a book. The journal should be kept in a spiral notebook or
composition notebook. Folders and loose-leaf papers will NOT be accepted. The
criteria are as follows:




Students should write two entries per week (a total of 24 entries).
The title of the article or book should be written at the top of the page. I an
internet article, write the name of the website.
Each entry should be at least three-fourths of a page and dated.
Each entry should include a summary of the article and the student’s
response to the article.
Accepted reading material is listed below.
 Books – appropriate grade level
 Magazine articles – science, history, current events, controversial sports
topics
 Newspaper articles – science history, current events, controversial sports
topics
 Internet articles - same as above

As they said back in my day, “Reading is fundamental!”
