Analyzing Foils
A foil is a character that provides a striking contrast to another character. By using a foil, a
writer can call attention to traits possessed by the main character because of the contrast with the
other character. In some ways, Cyclops works as a foil to Odysseus.
Instructions:






You will create a mini-poster (regular printer/construction paper) that shows the contrast
between these two characters.
On one half of the paper, draw images that show Cyclops’s traits that contrast with those
of Odysseus.
On the other half, draw images that show Odysseus’s traits that contrast with those of
Cyclops.
You may use any kind of symbolism you like to show these traits.
You must show 4-6 traits.
For each trait, you need to incorporate a line from the text that shows the trait.
4-6 specific traits of Cyclops that clearly contrast with Odysseus
4-6 specific traits of Odysseus that clearly contrast with Cyclops
1 specific line for each trait listed that clearly shows that trait
