Name: _______________________________________________ English 1 Period 6 Mrs. Greco The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros Summative Assessment One of my favorite aspects of this novel is the style: unique, poetic, and easy to relate to. Cisneros writes about a very common theme in literature, growing up and developing one’s identity, but there are many more themes throughout the novel. Each vignette can be analyzed as its own text. For your summative assessment of this novel, you will be assigned a section to analyze, interpret, and present to the class. You will become the “expert” on your particular section. This assignment will require both a slideshow presentation and a group presentation. Slideshow Instructions/Requirements: You will be required to create a slideshow using Google Drive. Your presentation must follow the format below: Title Slide o Book title & author o Chapter title(s) you were assigned o Your name o Image Content Slide (You may need to complete this on more than one slide) o The theme you will be discussing from your vignette(s) o One major line which accurately portrays the theme You must use correct parenthetical citation i.e. “Line from the text” (Cisneros 5). o Commentary A clear analysis and explanation of how the excerpt you chose portrays the theme. A conversation on how the entire vignette helps Sandra Cisneros portray her theme. This should be a 1 paragraph analysis Literary Device Slide o Identify a section of your text which shows the author’s use of a literary device. Use proper parenthetical citation. o Commentary A one paragraph response which explains how the author’s use of the literary device helped portray the theme. Works Cited o Be sure to cite where you got your information from. You can use www.citationmachine.net to help you cite any websites or other texts you used for this project. o The proper citation for The House on Mango Street is: Cisneros, Sandra. The House on Mango Street. New York: Vintage, 1991. Print. o Book titles need to be placed in italics or underlined o Citations should be typed using the hanging format. I will go over this with the class. Name: _______________________________________________ English 1 Period 6 Mrs. Greco You are expected to design your slideshow presentation in such a way that it is easy to read, visually appealing and highly informative. You will receive a rubric for your slideshow (See attached). Be sure to refer to this when creating your project. To help you with your research and analysis I recommend the following websites: http://www.litcharts.com/lit/the-house-on-mango-street/themes http://www.sparknotes.com/lit/mangostreet/themes.html o These sources are meant to help you better understand the text. Your analysis should still be written in your own words. Do not simply copy and paste from these sources. We will be working on this in class for 2 days (including Freshman Seminar). If you do not finish your presentation after the two days, you are required and expected to complete it at home. Group Presentation Instructions/Requirements: You will be responsible to teach your chapters to your group members. In your presentation you should: Have a full understanding of your chapters and therefore not simply read from the slideshow. Be able to answer questions about your presentation. Speak clearly and enthusiastically Presentations are scheduled to be presented on _____________________________. Group work will be explained on presentation day. You will be given a classwork grade on the work that you complete in small groups.
