1. Observe
I have observed students at Jeannette Senior High School using different types of
writing utensils.
2. Formulate Question (Must correlate with your observation)
Do students at Jeannette Senior High School prefer using a mechanical pencil, a
wooden pencil, or a pen?
3. Previous Data (you can make this data up for now)
After researching, I have found that in the year of 2007 a similar study was done
throughout high schools in Westmoreland County. The studied showed that 67%
of high school students prefer using a mechanical pencil, 13% of students prefer
using a wooden pencil and 20% prefer using a pen.
4. Hypothesis (must agree with the previous data that you present in step 3)
Students at Jeannette Senior High School will prefer using a mechanical pencil
compared to a wooden pencil or pen.
5. Experiment
Step 1: I will survey 100 students at Jeannette Senior High School (25/grade
level).
Step 2: Each student will be requested to write the sentence, I love to write, using
a bic 0.7 mechanical pencil, an Annihalator 1020 number 2 wooden pencil, and a
black bic round stick pen.
Step 3: The student will be asked to rate the writing utensils in order of
preference (1 – most preferred, 2 – in the middle of preference, 3 – least
preferred)
Step 4: I will collect and analyze the data for each type of writing utensil.

58% of students at Jeannette Senior High School prefer Bic 0.7 Mechanical
Pencils over Annihalator 1020 Number 2 Wooden Pencils (with a preference of
16%) and Black Bic Round Stick Pens (with a preference of 26%).
