Begin class by distributing the weekly class opener handout. Complete and discuss the opener. 2. If needed, collect any remaining organizers/paragraphs from the Crash open-ended prompt assignment. 3. Review the first five chapters of Crash by Jerry Spinelli by having students work in pairs to complete a “Somebody Wanted But So” summary of the section. Discuss. 4. Begin reading chapters 6-11, pausing to discuss literary elements, including events, characters, and theme. Homework: none Assessments: questioning; discussion; summary Tuesday, 4/22/14 Instructional Strategies: 1. Complete and discuss the class opener. 2. Finish reading chapters 6-11 of Crash by Jerry Spinelli. 3. While reading, pause frequently to discuss literary elements, including events, characters, and theme. Homework: none Assessments: questioning; discussion Wednesday, 4/23/14 Instructional Strategies: 1. Complete and discuss the class opener. 2. Review chapters 6-11 of Crash by working in pairs to complete the questions for the section. 3. Instruct students to analyze the setting, characters, and point of view, and remind them that they must support their responses with evidence from the text, including page numbers. Homework: none Assessments: questioning; discussion Thursday, 4/24/14 Instructional Strategies: 1. Complete and discuss the class opener. 2. If needed, allow pairs to finish study questions for chapters 6-11 of Crash. 3. As pairs finish, review the questions, reminding students to add additional evidence given to their study guides. 4. If time allows, instruct students to begin working on the character and setting charts in the back of the packet, focusing on the following characters: Crash, Penn, Mr. Webb, Mrs. Webb, and Mike DeLuca and the first column in the setting chart (Penn’s house). Homework: Prepare for tomorrow’s quiz on chapters 1-11 of Crash. Assessments: questioning; discussion Friday, 4/25/14 Instructional Strategies: 1. Complete and discuss the class opener. Collect weekly opener handouts. 2. Administer a quiz on chapters 1-11 of Crash, and monitor students as they complete the assessment. 3. As students finish, instruct them to continue working on the character and setting charts in the packet. Homework: Complete assigned boxes on the character and setting charts for Monday.
