Set in a Dublin psychiatrists’ office, Fíorghael (Ultra Irish) is a short comedy film about language politics in modern Ireland. Mrs. Mc Crea (Bairbre Ní Chaoimh) is a loser. In desperation, she seeks the counsel of a renowned Dublin psychiatrist, who she hopes will help her get her life back together. Waiting in the reception area for her first session she meets a couple (Philip Judge, Ita Fitzmahony) who have come in for counselling in a last ditch attempt to save their failing marriage. The sense of prevailing doom and desperation is suddenly interrupted by the strange behaviour of the frumpy Gaeltacht receptionist Medbh (Maighréad Ní Chonghaile), who is gossiping in Irish to her best friend from home. When speaking English to the patients, Medbh is the model of friendly efficiency. But when she turns to Irish, she seems to unleash a torrent of Gaelic scorn against the three patients. Of course they haven’t a word of Irish between them ‘ terrible teacher at school’ and all that. And it is not long before they are reduced to a state of paranoical unease that is only compounded by Meabh's warm and helpful manner when she chooses to address them directly in English. Outraged that their own dear native language should be used against them in this manner, the three hapless losers embark on a voyage of personal discovery to find their inner Gaelic self … Zanzibar Films Ltd, 12 Magennis Place, Dublin 2, Republic of Ireland T: + 353 (0)1 671 9480 F: + 353 (0)1 671 9481 E: info@zanzibarfilms.net W: www.zanzibarfilms.net Company Directors: Edwina Forkin & Shimmy Marcus, Reg VAT No: IE 6373828 S Company Reg No.: 353828 2.
