2. Check folders and homework – reading chapters 9 to 16 and context
extracts, and summarising chapters
Students who haven’t done reading to go to LRC on LG Floor to read until
break – return at start of break to find out what we’ve done (should read
context extracts below during break)
Recap on focus and tasks of last lesson – chapter tasks, summarizing &
identifying quotes etc

3. Today’s focus: context of novel and developing relationships in chapters 8
to 16
Discuss extracts on Entailment (check understanding - why important in
the story?) Accomplishments and Dancing (whole class discussion)

4. Review (briefly) what has taken place: students spend 5 minutes
comparing summaries in pairs
Focus on close reading of extracts – invite one student in each pair to
read their summary of chapter to class but then look at developing
relationships, particularly Darcy/ Elizabeth and Elizabeth/ Wickham, but also
Jane/Bingley
Ch 8 – The Bingley sisters abuse Elizabeth; Miss Bingley attempts to flirt
with Darcy; a discussion of the accomplished woman. What is E’s
attitude to D and Miss B’s attitude?
Ch 9 – Mrs Bennett arrives and insists on Jane staying; She
embarrasses Elizabeth and is rude to Darcy; discussion of Bingley’s
character; Lydia reminds Bingley of his promise of a ball
Look at Instances of ill manners
Ch 10 – Miss B tries getting D’s attention; Elizabeth and Darcy argue
over Bingley’s "flawed" character; Miss B attempts to ridicule E and her
family; (E at end of chapter)

5. Students continue to offer brief summaries on chapters 11 to 16
Ch 11 – E and D argue – he feels "the danger of paying her too much
attention"
Ch 12 – J & E leave Netherfield; for Longbourne, against their mother’s
desire; D avoids speaking to E until she goes
Ch 13 – William Collins announces his arrival, offering "atonement" for
the entail…

Ch 14 – Mr C praises Lady Catherine de Bourgh; Lydia offends him,
interrupting his sermon
Ch 15 – Mr C announces his intent to marry one of the daughters (Jane,
then Elizabeth);
Mr C accompanies them to Meryton; they meet Mr Denny and Mr
Wickham;
D and B meet them - D and W shocked to see each other; they go to Mr
and Mrs Phillips house
Ch 16 – Dinner at the Phillips – E very taken with Wickham; he tells her
of his history with D, who has stolen his "living", D’s sister Georgiana;
and that Lady C is D’s aunt

6. Write question on board:
How helpful is the title ‘Pride and Prejudice’ in understanding the relationship
between Elizabeth and Darcy?
(NB Check understanding of terms "pride" and "prejudice")
7. Students brainstorm ideas and find quotes/textual references to
support points in relation to question (working in pairs on A3)
(e.g. Is there only one type of pride? – Charlotte L vs Elizabeth’s view, Mrs B,
Miss B; who is proud, who prejudiced? Is pride justifiable? Does it mean the
same now as it did in Austen’s time?)

8. Elicit points and quotes/ references to board (invite students to come up
to board and write). Students note down ideas

9. Summing up of lesson/ learning:
- looked at how cultural context defines people’s actions/ attitudes
(Manners, Patronage, Wealth)
- Reviewed chapters 8 to 16, focussing on the developing relationships
- Considered how the concepts of pride and prejudice help us understand
the novel
