I would like to share the book ”Pride and Prejudice” with you. Mrs. Bennet had five
daughters, namely, Jane, Elizabeth, Mary, Catherine and Lydia. Jane and Elizabeth
were the most beautiful among the girls. Mrs. Bennet always thought of
marrying her daughters to someone rich.
Mr. Bingley, a rich young man from the north of England, came to the village.
Mrs. Bennet was happy as it would be a good chance for her girls. Mr. Bingley
was young, handsome, friendly and best of all. One day, he attended a ball. At
the ball, Mr. Bingley fell in love with Jane at the first sight. Mrs. Bennet was
glad to know that. Mr. Bingley turned up in the ball with his friend, Mr. Darcy.
Mr. Darcy was a tall, handsome man with a noble appearance and great fortune.
However, he refused to meet other ladies and spoke only to his friends in the
ball. Everyone thought that he was the proudest and most disagreeable man in
the world. Elizabeth was also disgusted about his pride. Later, thanks to
Elizabeth’s brightness, Mr. Darcy was attracted and gradually generated some
good feelings towards her. A few days later, Mr. Bingley was told to leave the
village by his sister and Mr. Darcy. Jane was sad but she still loved him.
Mr. Wickham was a handsome man from an army regiment. He told Elizabeth
that his father left him a great fortune but it was misappropriated by Mr. Darcy.
Also, she knew that the leave of Mr. Bingley was partly because of Mr. Darcy.
After that, Elizabeth’s resentment towards Mr. Darcy increased.
Later, Elizabeth was invited by Mr. Collins to his home. There, Elizabeth saw Mr.
Darcy again and Mr. Darcy could not help controlling his affection to her. He
made an offer of marriage to Elizabeth with pride but was refused. This strike
let him know his pride brought him a lot of setbacks. He left her a letter
admitting he had persuaded Mr. Bingley to leave and explaining what Mr. Wickham
said was false. In fact, Mr. Wickham was in debt. After reading the letter,
Elizabeth regretted what she had done to Mr. Darcy. She changed her mind to
Mr. Darcy gradually.
Next year, in summer, Elizabeth went to Mr. Darcy’s home with her uncle and
aunt. She met Mr. Darcy again and discovered that Mr. Darcy’s attitude was
totally different. He was courteous and respectful. She eliminated her prejudice
towards Mr. Darcy.
One day, Elizabeth was informed that Lydia ran away with Mr. Wickham. After
knowing this, Mr. Darcy looked for Mr. Wickham and Lydia and asked them what
happened. He found that Lydia loved Mr. Wickham so much but Mr. Wickham had
no intention of marrying Lydia without enough money. Then, Mr. Darcy helped Mr.
Wickham to pay all the debts and give him money to marry without informing
anyone but Mrs. Gardiner. Later, Elizabeth met her sister who told her what Mr.
Darcy had done for them. Elizabeth thanked Mr. Darcy for his help and all
prejudice towards Mr. Darcy was thrown away. Eventually, Elizabeth accepted
the offer of marriage with Mr. Darcy.
The marriage between Darcy and Elizabeth reveals the characteristics which
constitute a successful marriage. One of these characteristics is that true love
cannot be brought on by appearance, and must gradually develop between the
couple as they get to know each other. In the beginning, Elizabeth and Darcy
were distant from each other because of their prejudice. The series of events
which they both experienced gave them the opportunity to understand each
other and the time to reconcile their feelings. Thus, their mutual understanding
is the foundation of their relationship and leads them to a peaceful and lasting
marriage. This relationship between Elizabeth and Darcy reveals the importance
of getting to know one’s partner before marrying.
Obviously, the marriage of Lydia and Wickham is an example of a bad marriage.
Their marriage was based on appearance. When these qualities can no longer be
seen, the once strong relationship will fade away. Through their relationship, the
writer shows that hasty marriage based on superficial qualities quickly cool down
and leads to unhappiness.
These marriages contribute to the theme that a happy and strong marriage takes
time to build up and must be based on mutual feeling, understanding, and respect.
Hasty marriages, acting on impulse and based on superficial qualities, will not
survive and only lead to inevitable unhappiness.
