CALENDAR OF PRAYER FOR THE CHURCH AND THE DIOCESE January, February & March 2015 Please send any corrections or updates to <bathandwellscop@talktalk.net> The Anglican Cycle of Prayer ACP The Porvoo Communion - An Invitation to Prayer Porvoo Mission Partners MP Zambia Link Z The Anglican/Methodist Covenant Ang./Meth. The Accord of Reuilly Reuilly Please remember regularly in your prayers the ministry of the charity ReSource (based in Wells) as they work with Churches and Groups across the U.K. supporting Church renewal, mission, outreach and, in particular, their healing ministry. On December 28th last, we celebrated the “Feast of the Holy Innocents" but the suffering of innocents knows no end. Each and every week, without exception, Innocents both child and adult - are wilfully killed by gang or family violence, terrorist or military action, drunken or aggressive driving. There are also those who kill themselves and, sometimes, their family and unrelated others following the darkest despair, unbearable rejection, unendurable pain or perceived shame. The mentally disturbed also sometimes kill, often at random. For the victims, it is over and they are at peace, beyond further hurt. But do not forget that, for their families and friends, it is never over: the pain and despair can endure without limit. Please remember these Innocents and their loved ones - by name if possible - in your prayers at the end of each week. Remember also those for whom each day is filled with fear, whose innocence has been destroyed and trust undermined by violent, predatory and unscrupulous individuals often in a position of trust and authority. Those who have caused these hurts are not themselves beyond the reach of God’s Love and forgiveness, even though difficult or even impossible for us, and should also be remembered by us. Pray also for the many suffering in Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Nigeria, Palestine, Syria and the Ukraine from politically or religiously inspired violence especially death threats towards Christians as well as from famine. Please remember those, some of whom you can name, who suffer from enduring ill-health – whether physical or mental - including those assailed by a fresh problem each time the previous problem clears. Remember as well those who suffer alongside their family member or friend. Remember those brought low by natural catastrophes, often made worse by indifference, corruption and inefficiency including those still enduring the after effects of flooding in Somerset and other places. Each Saturday is marked "Innocents” as an aide memoire. Sunday 28-Dec-2014 – Christmas 1 - Holy Innocents A sound is heard in Ramah, the sound of bitter weeping. Rachel is crying for her children; she refuses to be comforted; for they are dead. Pray for the holy innocents of Israel, victims of fear and anti-Semitism. Lord have mercy upon us, Christ have mercy upon us. A sound is heard in Gaza, the sound of bitter weeping. Pray for the holy innocents of the camps, victims of displacement and injustice. Lord have mercy upon us, Christ have mercy upon us. A sound is heard in Mogadishu, the sound of bitter weeping. Pray for the holy innocents of Somalia, victims of war and famine. Lord have mercy upon us, Christ have mercy upon us. A sound is heard in London, the sound of bitter weeping. Pray for the holy innocents of Britain, victims of indifference and greed. Lord have mercy upon us, Christ have mercy upon us. A sound is heard in our own town, the sound of bitter weeping. Pray for the holy innocents in our midst, victims of violence and selfishness. Lord have mercy upon us, Christ have mercy upon us. (Scotland: taken from a litany of the Iona Community. The full litany includes many other countries and needs.) The Bath & Wells Diocesan Association of Change Ringers NEW YEAR'S EVE ALMIGHTY and most merciful Father, Who hast given us grace in times past, and hast mercifully brought us to see the end of another year, grant that we may continue to grow in grace and in the knowledge of Thy dear Son. Lead us forward by Thy Spirit, from strength to strength, that we may more perfectly serve Thee, and attain unto a more lively hope of Thy mercy in Christ Jesus. Quicken our dull hearts, inspire us with warmer affections for Thee, 0 God, and for Thy heavenly Truth. Stir up the gift that is in us, and. pour down from above more abundant gifts of grace, that we may make progress in heavenly things. Increase our faith as Thou dost increase our years, and the longer we are suffered to abide on earth, the better may our service be, the more willing our obedience, the more consistent our daily lives, the more complete our devotion to Thee. Grant this our prayer, 0 gracious Father, which we humbly offer at the throne of grace, in the name and for the sake of Jesus Christ Thy Son, our Lord and Saviour. Amen. (Tracts for Christian Seasons, Nineteenth Century.) (From “A Chain of Prayer” – S.F. CofE – Church of England CinW – Church in Wales CofI – Church of Ireland ELC – Evangelical Lutheran Church A Prayer of Simeon Bar Sabbae, Persian Martyr Simeon Bar Sabbae was Bishop of Seleucid, Persia. He and some companions were put to death during the persecutions of Sapor II, between 339 and 340. 0 my Lord, press down on me the crown. Thou knowest well how much I do desire it, for I love thee with all my heart and soul. I shall be glad to come face to face with thee, for thou wilt give me rest. As things stand now, I shall live no longer on this earth, nor have to watch the sufferings of my people, see the churches devastated, the altars wrecked, the clergy sorely tried, the weak contaminated, the pusillanimous driven far from the truth, nor see my people, once so numerous, wiped out by bloody persecutions. I shall no longer be forced to watch my friends become my enemies and assassins, nor watch old and trusted friends become disloyal in the face of slaughters by the proud ones against our people. However it may be, I wish to bear heroic witness to the way of righteousness, to persevere in my vocation and courageously carry out my work so as to be an example to all the people of the Orient. I have eaten at the head of the table, and now I wish to die at the head of my brothers, and mix my blood with theirs. With them I wish to come to know the life that holds neither suffering nor pain, that knows not tyranny or victims. In that life I shan't be flayed by the threats of kings or the terrors of prefectures. Nor will anyone be able to drag me before the tribunal or make me tremble out of fear. In thee shall I correct the errors of my past, 0 life of truth, in thee my weary limbs will find repose, 0 Christ, sacred oil of our unction. In thee all my sad soul-hurts vanish, for thou art truly the cup of my salvation. Thou shalt dry these tears from my eyes, 0 consolation and joy! So long ago, yet so terribly relevant. ******************************************* For all corrections, comments and requests, please contact the Editor: Michael Rowe, "Tumbling Weir", Bleadney, Somerset BA5 1PF. email <bathandwellscop@talktalk.net >.
