CONCEPTS
Columbus was searching for trade route to Asia when he landed on an island in the
Caribbean.
Conquistadors came to conquer because they were promised whatever riches they
could find.
Spain and Portugal divided up the New World (South America). Spain got the west
side (on the Pacific Ocean) and Brazil got the east side (on the Atlantic Ocean; Brazil).
Know 4 reasons the conquistadors were able to conquer the Aztec and/or Incas:
o Diseases: small pox, chicken pox, measles killed hundreds of thousands
of Native Americans.
o Mocteczuma thought Cortés was a god prophesized to return in that
year, coming from the east and wearing a beard.
o Conquistadors had guns, cannons, horses, and dogs.
o Cortés got extra supplies and men.
o Inca Empire was in a political power struggle.
o Aztec Empire was in a time of the year when they should not have
prepared for war.
