Now, I know that Computer Applications will not only prepare me for the world of work, but it will teach me great skills that I can use everyday. I’m learning how to type by touch which will allow me to write my school essays and reports faster and neater. I will learn to format documents and use the formatting features in Microsoft Word. I will create spreadsheets and charts in Excel. I will apply PowerPoint templates and add graphics to slides to produce creative presentations. Computer Applications will give me the expertise to do well on assignments in all of my classes. Microsoft Word is a word processing application that can be used to create many different documents. In Computer Applications I will learn to format letters and memos. I will also prepare reports using MLA format; the same format used in English and social studies. Microsoft Word has great formatting features and tools which are similar in all of the Microsoft Office applications. I will learn to insert footnotes and endnotes into my reports. I will be able to insert bulleted text, columns, tables, pictures, and clip art, and I will be able to create mass mailings, labels, and flyers. Preparing all types of documents in Microsoft Word will be easy after one year in Computer Applications. Microsoft Excel is used primarily to create documents for projects in science, social studies or mathematics. Using Excel, I will learn to enter data into a spreadsheet. Once the data is entered, I will be able to sort it. I will also learn to insert formulas and functions. In addition, Excel makes it easy to insert colorful charts and graphs that make the data easier for the viewer to understand. Charts and graphs are useful in comparing two or more sets of data. I will learn about the different types of charts and when to use them. When I have completed the Computer Applications course, I will be able to create cool reports that display the results of my projects in color. Microsoft PowerPoint is a presentation application that I will be able to use to prepare oral reports. I will learn to create slides using the PowerPoint templates. The pre-set templates will make it easy for me to begin, and, later, I will learn to create my own master template and to alter existing templates. PowerPoint also has lots of features that make it easy for me to be creative. I can insert Clip Art, movies, sound, animation, graphics, and even my voice. I can even use my own photographs for backgrounds and email a self-contained slideshow to my teachers, friends, and family. Knowing PowerPoint will make my classroom presentations powerful and interesting. My skills will improve everyday in Computer Applications. Before long, I will be able to format a perfect term paper for English. I will be able to add data tables and colorful charts to my science project reports. I will have the ability to prepare fantastic slides for my social studies presentations. By the end of one year of Computer Applications, I will be well prepared to produce excellent documents for all of my classes. In addition, I will have the computer skills that I will need for the career of my choice. shg 09/20/04
