Trifles Writing Assignment Jimmy Culberson Trifles Writing Assignment Jimmy Culberson Part A – Explanation of Pictures Picture 1: This picture would begin the sequence of images that eventually leads to the photo of Mrs. Wright in Prision. This photo is Mrs. Hale in Her kitchen. Which isn’t a scene in the play but It could be a good flashback scene in the movie. She could be realizing what she left behind in her kitchen as she was abruftly ask to leave, like in the short story version of the play. Picture 2: Here we see Mr. Wright, hung, killed by someone, unknown at the time. This would be when they were first entering the house and Mr. Hale begins to tell his story of what he saw. Picture 3: This is when Mrs. Hale and Mrs Peters and in the kitchen, but for the purpose of the film I would modernize it slightly and make them be looking arounf the whole house. The women in the picture would be Mrs. Peters right before she finds the broken bird cage. Picture 4: In this picture there is a canary perhaps the peak of the only remaining happiness the two women would have left. This mental image of a nice pretty healthy bird will later be crushed by what the women find. Picture 5: This is Mrs. Hale’s expression as she finds the bird, a look of sheer horror and shock. This image could be the key to adding a “hook” for the viewers. This adds a sense of suspense and drama that will leave the viewers wondering what her terror was caused by. Picture 6: This is their mental thoughts about what could have happened to the bird, and is only there to add an sense of illusion to the potential viewers. People who would only see the images would not know what really happened until they viewed the whole moive. So people would come in thinking the cat killed the bird. Only to be shocked and surprised to learn the truth, and have the plot thicken. Picture 7: This is the dead bird in the box. This would only show up for a slpit second in the visual movie trailer. Because a scene such as this would be made more mysterious by only being displayed on screen just long enough to make out it was something dead. Picture 8: The conclusion to the sequence is Mrs. Wright in Prision with a look of despire and anguish. Knowing the truth about what happened and why. Part B – Musical Sections Bring Me To Life – by Evanescence I would play this when the husband, Mr. Wright is discovered and Mrs. Wright is sitting in her chair talking to Mr. Hale. I feel this would be a good choice because the lyrics speak of: “I’ve become so numb without a soul my spirit sleeping somewhere cold… save me from the nothing I’ve become,” The Song also has a powerful slow then upbeat tempo that could be well timed with the visuals of finding Mr. Wright’s body. Because of You – by Kelly Clarkson Trifles Writing Assignment Jimmy Culberson This clip could be good for when Mrs. Wright is in the rocking chair. While Mr. Hale is explaining what went on when he found her husband, the scene could go to a flash back, and start playing this song. Some of the lyrics are: “I'm forced to fake… A smile, a laugh everyday of my life… My heart can't possibly break… When it wasn't even whole to start with” How Far We’ve Come – by Matchbox Twenty You can get the basic idea from this song from the main chorus… Lets see how far we’ve come… This would be good at the end when Mrs. Hale and Mrs. Peters decide to take the bird so that it can’t be used as evidence. Seeing how they at first didn’t even want to think that there was any possible way Mrs. Wright could have did it. If Everyone Cared – by Nickelback This sing would be good for the closing credits. It would make people think about what they could do or haven’t done for some body likely. Some body like Mrs. Wright that only needed a friend. Part C – Character Sections COUNTY ATTORNEY – played by Nicholas Cage Nicholas Cage would be able to easily portray the subtle sarcasm, and belittling remarks that the attorney makes towards the women. He personality I think is the kind that would always want to get to the bottom of something. SHERIFF – played by Tommy Lee Jones As a Texas Ranger in Man of the House Tommy Lee Jones would be ideal for the sheriff in this play. He plays a role as if he was made for he whole life. MRS. PETERS – played by Sela Ward For those that don’t know this is Jacks wife, Dr. Laura Hall from the movie Day After Tomorrow. I think she would be a great fit for Mrs. Peters. She would also be a good fit age wise to be the wife of the Sheriff, which in this case was Jones. HALE – played by Christian Bale This was the man who played Batman in the recent film Batman Begins in 2005. Even though the personality portrayed for Hale’s character would be a drastic change form batman I believe he would still be a good fit. The viewers would be able to see a strong connection between him and the women portraying his wife, Katie Holmes. MRS. HALE – played by Katie Holmes When reading the play I get a sense that Mrs. Hale’s character is somewhat innocent and submissive. She’s a younger housewife that tries to see the positive. This would be a good fit for Katie Holmes.
