5. Dissertation Description
My dissertation examines the rhetoric of social movement leadership and hegemony in
the musical Wicked. I explore how theatre as a medium has been used in the past by
social protest organizations and social movements to communicate their messages to the
public, and I note how Wicked, while not advocating for any specific social cause, opens
its audience’s eyes to problems that social movement leaders face. Constructing a
rhetorical text using the New York performance script, sheet music, cast recording,
programs, and three performances of Wicked, I argue that Elphaba is a militant social
movement leader, and that the Wizard of Oz and Madame Morrible serve as the
hegemon. Furthermore, using the character of Glinda as an example, I argue that the line
between social movement leadership and government leadership is not as strict as
rhetorical scholars have previously argued.
