First Estate – Clergy – both nobles and commoners - .5% of the population

Land owned – 10%

% of taxes – 0%

Second Estate – Nobility – leaders in government, judges, military leaders - 1.5% of the population

Land owned – 25-30%

% of taxes – 0%

Third Estate – Commoners – 98% of the population (peasants (75-80% of the population), small business owners, and Beourgeoisie – big business, bankers, lawyers etc).

Land owned – 65%

% of taxes – 100%

Each Estate gets 1 vote. The first and second estate could always out vote the third estate.

The third estate wants to let each individual member have a vote. King Louis XVI chooses the 1 vote for each estate

Explain the Tennis Court Oath.

In response the King’s decision, the Third Estate declares themselves the National Assesmbly.

They get locked out of their meeting hall so they go to a nearby indoor tennis court to meet. They pledge to continue to meet until they have written a new constitution for France
