How to write an answer to a quotation test:
Carefully read the following quotes and tell me these 3 things about each: 1) Who is
saying the quote? 2) What is going on in the play at the time the quote is said? 3)
Why is the quote significant?
Example:
“More Weight”
1)This is said by Giles Corey near the end of the play. 2)He has been found in
contempt of court because he will not give the name of the man who overheard
Putnam, and because he will not answer the charge of witchcraft “aye” or “nay”.
He says this when the jailers are laying heavy stones upon him to get him to speak.
3)It is significant because it shows that he is willing to die rather than confess to
witchcraft or bring harm upon another man. Also, it shows that he is a flat character
because he is still as stubborn as he was in Act I.
Practice with these, too
1. “Now look you. All of you. We danced…And that is all. And mark this. Let either
of you breathe a word…and I will come to you in the black of some terrible
night…And you know I can do it; I saw Indians smash my dear parents’ heads on the
pillow next to mine…”
2. “Why it is all simple. I come to do the Devil’s work. I come to counsel Christians
they should belie themselves. There is blood on my head! Can you not see the blood
on my head!!”
3. “He have his goodness now, God forbid I take it from him.”
4. “Tonight when I open my door to leave my house—a dagger clattered to the
ground…You cannot hang this sort. There is danger for me. I dare not step outside
at night.”
5. “We burn a hot fire here; it melts down all concealment.”
6. “Because it is my name! Because I cannot have another in my life! Because I lie and
sign myself to lies! Because I am not worth the dust on the feet of them that hang!
How may I live without my name? I have given you my soul; leave me my name!”
