Lesson Objective: Become familiar with the research paper format including citations and
multiple sources
Materials: multiple reading selections about one predetermined topic (ex – The Influence of Hip Hop
Culture on Children or The Benefits of School Uniforms), 2 colored highlighters/per student

ACTIVITY 1
1. Introduce the topic with picture or writing prompts about controversial issue
2. S write short persuasive essay explaining their opinion
3. Class can survey students and create a graph of results – comparing results
ACTIVITY 2
1. T gathers several articles on appropriate reading level on both sides of argument
2. T explains types of evidence: statistics, expert opinion, facts, quotes etc.
3. Class reads each article and identifies the evidence types
4. Class writes MLA citation for each article
5. Class highlights PRO and CON evidence using 2 different colors
6. Class makes note cards for each piece of evidence to be used
7. S make a list of pro and con evidence
8. S categorize evidence into types of evidence
9. S decide which side of argument they will take (Pro or Con)
10. Class writes introduction together citing 3 reasons for either argument
11. S use list of categorized evidence to write at least 3 paragraphs
(each paragraph will correspond to the 3 reasons listed in the introduction)
12. Class writes conclusion summarizing 3 main ideas either pro or con
13. S are responsible for keeping all articles and note cards
14. Final papers will be typed and submitted with notes/articles for final grade
ACTIVITY 3
1. Class will debate the issue about which they wrote their paper
2. Debate will be scored
3. S will use the notes/evidence collected during the research project
4. S may select which side of the debate they want to argue
