SUBJECT: Social Studies

TITLE OF LESSON The Triangular Trade

STANDARD

5.2.6 Describe the introduction of slavery into America and the responses of slave families to their condition.

OBJECTIVE:

(Write 2-5 objectives stating expected learner outcomes)

Students will complete a map of the triangular trade route showing the routes and goods traded between Europe, Africa and the Americas.

Students will write a description of the Middle Passage of the Triangular Trade.

MATERIALS NEEDED:

(What primary sources are using? What maps are you using?)

Students will have copies of a map of the Triangular Trade

Students will have copies of passages from the autobiography of Olaudah Equiano.

Movie clip of Roots dramatizing the treatment of Africans during the Middle Passage.

CONTENT DELIVERY;

(What information will be delivered to the student before they begin so they can be successful at the activity and understand its purpose?)

Students will read and discuss excerpted pages from the book Slavery in America describing the capture, transporting and selling of Africans into slavery in the Americas. The discussion will include the political and economic reasons for the triangular trade.

Students will study a map of the triangular trade showing the shipping routes across the

Atlantic Ocean and the goods transported between European countries, Africa and the

Americas.

Students will read passages describing the Middle Passage from the autobiography of

Olaudah Equinao, a former slave who later wrote the story of his life.

Students will look at engravings of the treatment of Africans from their capture in Africa, transport across the Atlantic in slave ships and selling into slavery at auctions in the Americas.

ACTIVITY;

(What activity will be done to teach the concept?)

Students will use a map of the Triangular Trade to draw in the routes and label/color a blank map.

Students will watch a video clip from the movie Roots and use the information gathered from the readings and engravings to write a short essay describing the capture, transport and selling of Africans into slavery.

STUDENT ASSESSMENT;

(What type of homework will be assigned to students to allow them independent or group practice with the concept?)

Student will be assessed on the accuracy of their Triangular Trade map.

Students will be assessed on the content of their written descriptions of the Middle Passage of the Triangular Trade
