Czech 1 Josh Czech Professor Hurd Inquiry to the Profession 19525, Section 600 15 September 2004 Educational Autobiography As a student who graduated from Lake High School, I received a very good education, from well-taught teachers. In my opinion, Lake Schools have some of the best teachers in Stark County. That is a factor for why Lake Students have some of the highest grades in testing, and a high graduation rate as well. The main reason why I would want to be a teacher, is because I do not see myself, being happier with any other occupation I want to be a teacher, because I love teaching children and my peers new things. I feel that passing knowledge onto others is a way of giving back to things I have learned. Most of the knowledge I received was from school, and I want to strive to be as good as a teacher as mine were. I would like to teach in high school, because I feel I relate better with teenagers instead of elementary kids. Another reason why I want to teach is because I would like to be a coach for a school sport. I hear schools are always looking for teachers to volunteer to coach for the school. I have always loved sports and I would love to pass my knowledge and love for them onto the players. During my freshman and sophomore years in high school, I went through a period that was really hard in my life. I remember we had these journals that we had to write in about our lives. I would always put down stuff about how depressed I was and how I hated life. My teacher, Mr. Lineweaver, eventually turned the journals into the principal. After talking with counselors and my mother, I went and got help to overcome my problems. I believe Mr. Lineweaver was concerned for me and did something that some teachers might not have done for a fellow student. He cared about his students and he showed that by trying to get me help. This event triggered my first thoughts of wanting to become a teacher; to help others learn, grow, and mature. As I went further in high school, I juggled my options of joining the coast guard to work in law enforcement, or go to Czech 2 college to be a teacher. At first I selected the law enforcement route, but after several complications, I settled for becoming a teacher. I am happy with my decision, and I see it being just as rewarding. I believe the purpose of education is to help a student develop skills to make a living of some sort. To get a good education, a student should have good knowledge in Math, English, Science, Reading, and Social Studies skills. When a student graduates high school, they should have the skills to either get a full time job, or pursue a further education. I believe that all teachers should encourage their students to go to college, to make the best life for themselves that they can. Another reason for education is that it helps people succeed. If you do not have an education, there are good chances, you will have trouble having the life you may want. An education helps you get a good job, and further your skills, to improve in the work force. My last reason as to why people need an education is because it helps you in society. It is a given that people have respect for you if you have an education. It helps you get jobs, and if you go to college, you can get even higher paying jobs. It helps broaden your skills as a person as well. I imagine myself as a teacher, who will try to make sure that each student leaves my class having learned something new. I want my students to respect me not only as a teacher, but also as a human being. I also am going to strive to help my students understand the subject that I am teaching. If they have questions, I want them to feel comfortable coming to me so I can help. As a teacher, I want to be looked at as a leader, and not the student’s best friend. I imagine myself as a teacher who will do my best to help the students learn, and to be there, to help them along the way in their education. Also, I would want to be looked at, as a role model for some students. If they are able to learn in my classroom, I will feel like I have done my job. I remember my senior English teacher told me something one morning before school that I will never forget. She told me the greatest reward being a teacher is “seeing my old students come back to visit me, and to tell me how much they had learned from having me as their teacher.” That is how I want to feel as well, to be told a student remembers me for the good that I did for them. I also see myself as a teacher and sports coach. I do not want to prove the assumptions, that coaches Czech 3 are not good teachers. I dislike it when people say coaches only stay as teachers, because they do a good job in the sport they coach. Another thing I disagree with is when students think that teachers favor the sports players and go easier on them. I will be a fair teacher who will coach for fun, and not for the simple fact of winning and being an athlete’s friend. From kindergarten to my senior year in high school, I have met many teachers, who have inspired me to do my best. As silly and pointless as it sounds, I can actually name all my teachers that I have had in my life. This is because they made an impression on me whether it was good or bad. I would have to say though that during my high school life, I learned the most about my teachers. To me they seemed to almost dedicate their lives to helping others, I find it kind of inspiring. I remembers my old band teacher, Mr. Kibler, was more of a father figure to me then he was a teacher. He was a teacher who taught me valuable knowledge in school and also in life. The amazing thing was that he did not have to be there to listen to my problems in life, instead he chose to because he cared about his students. I know I will be a teacher who cares for his students, just like Mr. Kibler did. I remember from time to time he called us band members his “second family.” To me, a teacher who cares for his students is going above expectations for his job. I want to be a teacher, because I want to help others learn. I see myself as a teacher that is willing to go the extra mile to help a student out. It brings me great joy knowing I have made someone’s day a little easier as well. The purpose of getting an education is to help you succeed in life. This is why I am going to college to become a teacher. I want to live a better life and college will help me reach my goals. Czech 4
