George Parkway, just two blocks North of 50 Highway, it is easily accessible
from many locations. Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church has been serving
our community for more than 30 years and is looking forward to continuing
our service through Abounding Love Preschool & Parents Day Out.
We are dedicated to providing a stimulating environment by helping the child
to develop socially, physically, emotionally, intellectually, and spiritually. We
believe that a Christian education enables a child to discover that God is a
God of love. Our prayer for your children here at Abounding Love is that
each child may grow and mature under God’s direction and inspiration. We
believe that our Preschool & Parents Day Out is a servant of Christ, striving
to bring church, home and community into harmony.
We provide a safe and loving environment for your children to learn and grow
in faith. We have a program that is Christ-centered and family oriented. As
parents you are always welcome to visit, volunteer or call with any questions
or concerns.
We strive to meet all goals of the National Lutheran School Accreditation
(NLSA). This information is available at www.lcms.org. Because we are a
religious facility, we are license exempt: however, we still receive all required
state inspections.
The purpose of this Parent Handbook is to
1) Promote understanding and cooperation between parents and staff
of Abounding Love.
2) Answer questions parents may have concerning the daily operation
of Abounding Love.
3) Familiarize parents with the ministry of Beautiful Savior Lutheran
Church.
Abounding Love will provide your children with a quality education in a
Christian environment. Abounding Love, along with the church, is eager to
work with you during this important time in your child’s development. If you
have questions at any time please feel free to contact any member of our
staff.

Curriculum
Abounding Love believes that parents are the child’s first teachers. We
believe that children learn best by working with a hands-on approach using
their five senses. We realize that each child is unique and offer them an
atmosphere that is positive, stimulating and creative to help them develop
and learn. It is our hope that in focusing on the whole child, with a strong
emphasis on self-esteem, our children will enjoy continued success in the
world. Here at Abounding Love we use playtime as a way to help the
www.abounding-love.com

Parent Handbook
children learn. We use this tool in helping them model, create, explore, solve
problems, interact socially, pretend-play, and dream. We use a variety of
methods to create such an environment for the children including: Bible
Stories/Chapel Time, fine/gross motor skills, number and letter readiness,
health, safety and social skills, physical activity, arts, nature, and center
time.
Teachers plan a daily lesson with the interests of the children in mind. We
are a Lutheran Preschool, so Christian teachings will be incorporated into
each day. We will also have devotional time each day. You are welcome to
talk with your child’s teacher about the lesson plan or any other questions
you may have. We will use the Voyages curriculum, a Lutheran based
program for introducing young children to Jesus. Each week students will
study a carefully selected Bible story to explore how it relates to their
relationship with Jesus. Children will experience worship time, listen to the
story in a variety of ways using pictures, puppets, and props, and participate
in activities related to the Bible story. In addition to growing their faith
children will also prepare for kindergarten by studying related themes.

In order to assist you and your child when you arrive at Abounding Love we

Absences
Abounding Love would love to have your child attending each class, but if
your child will be unable to attend please call the office. Note that tuition will
not be reimbursed for absences. If your child is sick please keep him/her
home for 24 hours after a fever has broken. If there was vomiting or diarrhea
the child must be symptom free for 24 hours before returning to school.
We want your child to feel safe and happy in our environment so if you have
concerns with your child from separation to shyness please talk to us. We will
do our best to make your child as comfortable as possible.
If a student fails to attend classes with no notification for two weeks then
he/she will forfeit their spot and no refund will be given.
Dress code
We ask you to dress your children in play wear each day. There are many
days during the week that activities may be messy. We will do our best to
cover the children’s clothing but ultimately the school is not responsible for
damaged clothing. Do not send your children to school with sandals, crocs, or
slip on shoes. Remember that your children will go outside for recess each
day weather permitting.
Please no outside toys brought to school unless it is Show and Tell Day.
Playground
Children will be outside on the playground every day unless temperatures go
below freezing, it is raining or snowing, or if the playground is wet or covered
in snow. Children should dress appropriately for the weather, including
jackets, hats, and gloves as needed. Tennis shoes are best for safety on the
playground equipment.
During school hours, the playground is only available for the children
attending Abounding Love. Parents with siblings are not permitted to be on
the playground or playground equipment while classes are in session.

Family Communications
At Abounding Love we believe that the parents are the child’s first teachers,
and a child grows and flourishes when families are actively involved in the
educational process. To keep our families involved we will use a variety of
communication tools such as:





Written notes
Contacting the parent(s) by personal phone calls
Monthly newsletter covering activities, upcoming events, and other
information
Parent/Teacher conferences in the fall and spring
Email
We encourage families to contact their child’s teacher or the administrative
staff with needs or concerns. Parent feedback is appreciated.
Calendar-School Closings
Abounding Love will follow the Lee’s Summit R-7 holiday schedule. Please
check the Abounding Love calendar for the exact dates. If there is inclement
weather we will follow the Lee’s Summit R-7 closing schedule. Please note
that we will not reimburse tuition due to weather related closings. In case of
delayed starts we will not have school nor will we have early dismissals due
to weather. You may pick your child up early if you feel it necessary..

Director
The Director is the administrator of the preschool’s daily operations.
The director’s job is to oversee all programs, teaching staff, curriculum,
state regulations, and daily procedures. She/He will also collect tuition,
maintain bookkeeping and enrollment, and schedule activities. The
Director will be available to answer questions during scheduled office
hours 8:30 am-1:30 pm Monday-Friday, August-May.
Staff
The teaching staff is responsible for planning and implementing the
daily classroom activities. Assistant Teachers will aid the teachers in
carrying out the lessons for the day.
Admission and Record Files
The Missouri State Health Department requires the preschool to have
specific forms on file. Lee’s Summit Medical Center is the closest hospital
and will be utilized unless specified by the parent.
1) Child Registration Form for License-Exempt Facilities- One-sided
form complete with all information.
2) Medical Exam- It must contain all current information including
immunizations. These are needed for the safety of all the children. The
exam must be filled out by a physician including name, address, and all
contact phone numbers within 30 days of the start of school. If this form is
not completed by the 1st day of school then a current copy of the
immunizations must be provided on or before the first day of school. We do
not accept children who have not been fully immunized.
3) Notice of Parental Responsibility- This provides the dates of state
inspections, shows the student/teacher ratios and preschool policy. Parents
must sign this form.
4) Photo release form for minors- This allows us to take pictures of
your child to use on projects, progress reports, bulletins, and for their artistic
activities. Only the first name will be used if needed.
A child that has an incomplete file will be asked to refrain from attending
class until all paperwork has been filled out.

Immunizations
All immunizations must be current and on file by the first day of school. If
your child receives any immunizations during the school year please send an
updated copy to the Director’s office. All of our records are monitored by the
Kansas City Health Department. These are required by the State:
 DPT: Diphtheria, Pertussis, (Whooping Cough) and Tetanus
 Polio
 MMR: Measles, Mumps, and Rubella
 HIB
 Hepatitis B
 Varicella (Chicken Pox vaccine)
If your child should contract a communicable disease we need to be notified
as soon as possible. We have a responsibility to notify the other parents of
the possible exposure.
Snacks/ Holiday Treats
At Abounding Love we strive for a safe and healthy environment for all
children. We need every parent to follow these guidelines for bringing
snacks. We will have a scheduled snack time in each session. Abounding
Love will provide water and parents will provide the snack. There will be a
snack calendar handed out and posted each month. All snacks sent to school
must be in the original unopened container with ingredient label. These
items should be store bought and require no refrigeration. Feel free to check
the list from the Missouri Department of Health Guidelines.
There are exceptions for Birthday parties or other special parties.
In order to protect the health of the children and to prevent food borne
illnesses such as Hepatitis A and Salmonella, the Bureau of Child Care is
requesting the snacks be limited to non potentially hazardous food from an
approved source as outlined in 19 CSR-40-60.090(9) © Missouri Department
of Health Rules for License-Exempt Child Care Facilities. Non-potentially
hazardous foods are foods that are incapable of supporting bacteria or viral
growth and are free of inadvertent contamination. Below is a list that meets
the criteria for non-potentially hazardous foods under Federal, State and
local health guidelines.

Whole Fruits and vegetables- TO BE PREPARED BY THE CENTER:
Apples, Bananas, Grapefruit, Grapes, Oranges, Peaches, Pears,
Carrots, and Celery.
Commercially canned fruits- LEFT IN CANS TO BE PREPARED BY
THE CENTER: Peaches, Pineapple, Applesauce, Pears.
Crackers, Cookies, etc- IN AN UNOPEND BOX SENT TO CENTER:
Graham crackers, Animal crackers, or any other crackers. All cookies
must be in an unopened bag, box, or from the bakery with label or
commercially packaged.
Prepared Snacks- INDIVIDUAL: Cheese and crackers, granola bars,
fruit bars all must be unopened with the label on them.
In our center we may have children with severe allergies and we ask all
parents to exclude snacks that contain peanuts and nuts. This is vital so
that all of our children are in a safe environment. Carefully read each label
before sending it to class.
Parents of children with severe allergies are asked to send extra snacks to
school with their child. This is just in case the child forgets a daily snack so
that the teacher can provide an appropriate snack knowing all ingredients
are allergy free. These snacks are kept separate from the others and marked
with the child’s name.
Visitors and Volunteers
Parent volunteers are essential to our school. All volunteers must sign in and
out at the Preschool Office and receive a volunteer name tag. Volunteers act
under the supervision and authority of the Lead Teacher, Assistant Teacher
and Administrative Staff. Volunteers are assigned responsibilities within the
classroom by the Lead or Assisting Teacher.
It is the teacher's, and not the volunteer's, responsibility to see that the
program is implemented and that the classroom is properly managed. Any
questions or concerns about the program or any children should be addressed
to the Teacher. This helps to ensure continuity in the program as well as
consistency and professionalism in the management of the class. If you plan
on volunteering on a regular basis you will be asked to fill out a background

check. The, the cost will be paid for by the church.
Any information or issues that may arise regarding the progress or
development of specific children is to be kept in the strictest confidence and
should only be discussed with classroom teaching staff or Abounding Love
administrative staff.
All children are to be spoken to individually in a quiet tone of voice and using
positive language. Talking to the teachers or other adults in the room during
class time is discouraged so that full attention is always given to the children.
Discipline
Some of the most important aspects of growth for preschoolers are helping
them relate appropriately to others, express their emotions in acceptable
ways, and participate properly in classroom activities. If a child is having
significant or recurring difficulties in any of the above areas, parents are
contacted so they and Abounding Love staff can work together to help the
child.
We believe in a positive approach to discipline. Our goal is to help each child
become self-disciplined. Our rules are very basic and need to be followed to
allow all children to learn in a safe and loving environment.
The environment and activities will be appropriate to the developmental
abilities of the children. Children will be helped to develop appropriate
behavior through various means of guidance and discipline such as positive
example, listening, positive reinforcement, redirection, time-out, and
behavior modification.
Aggressive Behavior
Aggressive behavior from a child that is exhibited while enrolled shall be
observed for detrimental effects on the other children and staff. If, after
attempts are made to meet the aggressive child’s needs, the behavior has not
improved, discontinuance of enrollment will occur.
There may be times that a child’s behavior is so detrimental to the other
children that our staff may find it necessary to remove a child from the
facility on a temporary or permanent basis.

Child Abuse Reporting Laws
In accordance with Missouri state law, our school staff is obligated, under
penalty of fine or jail term, to report the reasonable suspicion of physical
abuse, emotional abuse, emotional deprivation, physical neglect, inadequate
supervision, sexual abuse, or exploitation. In this very serious and legally
narrow area, the school will not contact the parents in advance of making a
report to legal authorities. The clear intent of the law, based on the
seriousness of the crimes listed above, is to mandate that a report be made
when there is a reasonable suspicion of abuse.
Nondiscriminatory Policy
Abounding Love admits students of any race, color, nationality or ethnic
origin to all rights, privileges, programs, and activities generally accorded or
made available to students at the school. We do not discriminate on the basis
of race, color, national or ethnic origin in administration of our educational
policies and or any other school related programs.
Emergency Plan
We regularly participate in fire drills, have plans for medical emergencies,
and have trained our staff in First Aid and CPR for children.
Fire Drills: We have monthly fire drills and work closely with the City
Fire Department to ensure the safety of our school community. We
have a set meeting place near Prairie View Elementary School. All
children will be made aware of this meeting place.
Tornado Drills: All children practice tornado drills at the beginning of
each semester. Children are ushered to the basement room 100 and
will remain there until danger has passed. Do not attempt to pick up
your child during a tornado warning.
Illness Guidelines and Procedures
If your child becomes ill during school hours he/she will be cared for by
Abounding Love staff until a parent or emergency contact has picked-up the
child. We have set in place guidelines we must follow when a child is feeling
ill.
www.abounding-love.com
Page 13
Parent Handbook
1) We consider a child sick when there are signs of bumps, rashes,
swollen glands, eyes with colored discharge, diarrhea, vomiting, or if a
fever is suspected.
2) If a fever is suspected, a thermometer will be used. If the temperature
is over 100 degrees the parent will be contacted and the child will be
sent home.
3) If there is not a fever, but the child is feeling ill, our staff will do a
courtesy call to let the parent know.
If a child is ill with the following please do not send him/her to school. All
children may return to school when they are symptom free for 24 hours with
no medication.
 Temperature of 100 or more

 Red or inflamed eyes
 Red or swollen joints
 Persistent cough (let Director know of a Chronic Cough i.e. Asthma or
Allergy induced)

 Skin rash (must be documented not to be contagious)
To ensure the health and safety of all the children we reserve the right to not
allow them to stay if they exhibit any of the above symptoms.
Administration of Medicine
Abounding Love must be aware of any health or physical conditions that
require ongoing medication to be given, such as epilepsy. All other conditions
that do not require medication to be given must be indicated. ALL
MEDICAL CONDITIONS MUST BE DOCUMENTED. Medication will only
be administered when a parent has signed a Medication Authorization Form
from the State of Missouri Health Department. All medicine must be in the
container that was dispensed from the pharmacy (original container). The
label must have the following information: student’s name, date, Dr.’s name,
medication name, quantity, frequency, and dosage. The employee that
administers the medication must record: staff signature, date, name of
medicine, dosage, and the time it was dispensed.

arrival. They will then wash hands after each bathroom break, before
snack time, lunch, and anytime the teacher deems it necessary. The
children will be taught proper hand washing techniques.
First Aid: When a child is injured under our supervision we will write
an incident report. We will ask you to initial the report and give you a
copy upon pick up if requested. In the event of a serious injury you
will be contacted immediately. Please make sure there are correct
