FORMAT: 1-2 page Typed, Double Spaced, 12 Point Times, New Roman GRADED ON: Content, Organization, Creativity, Effort, Presentation IN-CLASS WORK TIME: _________________________, __________________________ PROJECT DUE: __________________ (Extra Credit) or ________________________ (Everyone) TOTAL POINTS: 60 To Kill a Mockingbird: Final Project Choose ONE of the following: 1. Soundtrack Music: Make a CD of at least 5 songs that represent the themes/characters/events in the story. If you do not have legal access to the songs you have chosen, attach the lyrics instead. Make a creative cover for the CD. Also, make liner notes that explain the relationship between the songs and To Kill a Mockingbird. In short, make sure there is at least one paragraph written for each song. Each paragraph should make connections between the song and the book. It should be evident from these paragraphs that you have read and that you have fully understood the themes and how they are connected to the lyrics of the songs you have chosen. 2. Quote Collage: On a sheet of poster board, make a collage that represents a theme, character, or an event in the story. Choose a significant quote from the novel that embodies the theme, character, or event, and center the rest of your collage around this quote. The collage should have attached a one-page typed paper explaining the theme, character, or event that you have visually presented in your collage. 3. Poetry 1: Write at least three short poems or one long poem in the form of your choosing about the story, a theme from the story, or one or more of the characters. The poem can be told from a narrator of your own creation, or it can be told from the perspective of one of the characters. Write a one-page paper explaining how your poems are connected to the story. Also, you will be required to read at least one of the poems to the class. 4. Poetry 2: Find a poem that shares a theme with To Kill a Mockingbird. Memorize the poem. Perform the poem in front of the class with some emotion and enthusiasm. Then present an explanation of how the poem is connected to the book. Your explanation needs to be one page, typed and turned in on the day you present. 5. Maycomb Model: Make a model of Scout’s neighborhood. Be sure to include all significant houses: the Finches’, Miss Maudie’s, Mrs. Dubose’s, Miss Rachel’s, Miss Stephanie Crawford’s, and the Radley house. Also, include important landmarks such as the pecan tree in the Radley yard. Label the items and present your model to the class. Write a one-page paper explaining the importance of three of the houses in your model to the novel. 6. Memory Box: Create a memory box for either Scout, Jem, Dill, or Boo. You may use a wooden box, a shoebox or other container; it should be decorated and attractive! The box itself should say something about the character. For example, Boo Radley’s box would likely be very simple and worn. This should be something your character would be proud of. Include at least five items in the box that would be important to your chosen character. What events occurred in the novel? What might your character keep to remember those events? Your box should show that you are familiar with the plot and the characters in TKM. Letters, photographs, postcards and souvenirs are all good items you could create for the box. Think about whom your character is close to and what he/she does for fun. Complete a one-page paper describing the significance of your chosen items to the novel and your character. 7. Story Board: Create a story board reproducing scenes from the novel. Take pictures of real places and people and arrange them in a logical order (such as chronologically, spatially, etc). Write a one-page paper explaining how the photos you took and chose represent scenes from TKM. Discuss how the photos enhance the theme, plot, setting, or characters in the novel. Use at least five photos. 8. Character Sketches: Create a sketchbook of at least five characters from TKM. Their appearance, facial features, and clothing should match the descriptions provided in the novel, with creative liberty. Write a onepage paper describing the importance of those characters in the novel and explaining why you drew them the way you did based on descriptions of those characters in the text. 9. Chapter Illustrator: A publisher has submitted an ad in the paper for an artist to do simple sketches depicting an important element of each chapter. You want to show the publisher your artistic abilities in hopes of being chosen for the job, so you complete sketches for five chapters of your choice to submit as a sample of your work. Complete these sketches and write a one-page description of why you chose the events you did to sketch from each chapter. How are they important to the novel as a whole? 10. Childhood Games: Scout and Jem spent most of their free time outdoors playing. Research (on the web or in the library) or ask an elderly person what games children played outdoors during the 1930’s. Choose 2 popular games which Scout and Jem might have played in Southern Alabama, and do the following for each: 1) Explain the rules of the game 2) Demonstrate to the class how it is played. 3) Write a one page paper explaining how Scout and Jem “grew up” through their childhood experiences in TKM. To organize papers you may label paragraphs.
