OCTOBER 2014 PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Cari amici, Important!!!. Several of our event dates have changed so please be sure to check for the changes and the details for the events contained in this newsletter. Please note the change in the IHL annual picnic date. It will be held this Sunday, October 5th, 2014, at the usual place, the Knights of Columbus Hall behind St. Leo's Church. If you want to help set up for the picnic, come by the K of C around 9:00 AM. John Asiello and the other volunteers would appreciate your assistance. The weather report is for a sunny 70 degree beautiful fall day so let's have a great turnout for this always fun time. On November 8th, we will have a pot-luck dinner along with a speaker, Linda Barrett Osborne, who will provide a presentation based on her book "Explorers, Emigrants, Citizens: A Visual History of the Italian-American Experience." Thanks to Lucio D'Andrea in arranging for Ms Osborne to provide her perspective on the contributions of Italians to our country. Here is an excerpt from a description of her book on her web page. "This book contains over 500 images, many of them never before published, ranging from the first map ever using the name "America" to the portraits of Joe DiMaggio and Marilyn Monroe from Look magazine. Not the usual history book about an ethnic group, which displays only a gallery of success and accomplishments. Images from the Library of Congress show the range and diversity of Italian-Americans themselves and of the lives they led in the United States. A book for Italian-Americans who cherish their heritage but also for American history enthusiasts and people interested in Italian culture who will discover many unknown contributions of Italy to American life." Please plan on attending this presentation along with your fellow lodge members for what promises to be a most interesting evening. Another pitch for our charity drive and Walkathon. It is important to support, through OSIA, our charities: Alzheimer's, Autism and Cooley's Anemia. So please use the donation letter in this newsletter to send in your contribution. Our members were very generous last year as we were able to triple our contributions from previous years. Thank you in advance for your generosity and please help us continue our support to these worthy causes. You do not have to participate in the Walkathon to contribute to our charity drive. Just send in your contribution to the IHL treasurer as described in the donation letter. Also, share the letter with friends, neighbors and others as they may want to support these worthy charities. After the Walkathon, we will meet at a restaurant TBD at the mall for lunch. Let me know if you plan on attending the Walkathon. Details will be provided in a separate email to those participating in the Walkathon. We are still looking for a replacement editor for the Newsletter as Paul is stepping down after some ten years in that position. If you would like to serve your lodge in that capacity or know someone who may want to do it, please email me at delillo1@verizon.net or call me at 703-354-2454.
