Literature Log – Candide IB English HL 2 – Ms. Laczny/Mr. Hercek For your lit log this time, you’ll be posting most of your entries on Udemy. You will be doing two rounds of postings and will be responding to a prompt for the third round. (You will post everything to turnitin by 7:30 on the due date for round three.) Round #1 Read Chapters 1-18 (they are short chapters!) Round #2: Finish reading the novel Round #3: Choose one of the prompts and respond in an essay Two posts due by 7:30 10/10A and 10/11B Two posts due by 7:30 10/15A and 10/16B Due 10/18A and 10/19B (turnitin by 7:30am on due date) Rounds #1 and #2: Each Udemy post should contain a direct quotation as well as a citation in MLA format. Remember that these posts need to be analytical (not just reactions to what you liked or disliked). Any reply should also include a direct quotation and citation!! Some ideas for Udemy posts: (note that this time there are no requirements for how many originals vs. replies – just make your posts good - you can do all originals, all replies, or any combination!) Techniques include but are not limited to: o Irony o Foreshadowing o Antithesis o Punctuation o Sentence structure (length, complexity, number/type of clauses) o Repetition o Anaphora o Flashback o Allusion o Setting (how it’s created, significance) o Setting of mood (and be sure to state what the mood is!) o Sound effect o Thematic event (and significance) o Parody o Satire Symbols and motifs: o o o o o o Character names (yes, you still need a quotation for character names) Weather Garden of Eden/paradise Trees/nature Beauty/lack of beauty Eyes/vision o o o o Color Honor Money/riches Work (Remember, Udemy posts must each include a quotation and its MLA citation, include what technique or symbol the quotation uses, and include an explanation of the effect/impact of that technique or symbol. Your explanation should include the author’s name in it.) *****Do not use quotations more than once (meaning, do not use a quotation from your Udemy posts in your response to the prompt).****** Round #3: Choose one of the prompts and respond in an essay (minimum 5 para.). The essay should be typed and posted to turnitin.com (along with your Round #1 & #2 posts in a Word doc). Remember that this is a piece of formal writing, so you should avoid personal pronouns like “I,” “me,” and “you.” You should integrate a quotation in each body paragraph and you should include specific examples from the novel to support your argument. *Please double space your response. Make sure you read the entire novel before selecting and responding to the prompt of your choice. Prompts: 1. Discuss the part played by minor characters in Candide, indicating what you think are the effects of their presence. 2. “In literature the concept of ‘home’ is often used to locate the thoughts, memories, and dreams of humankind.” In the light of this quotation, explore the ways in which home is used in Candide. 3. How has Voltaire explored the relationship between experience and understanding? Refer to Candide in your response. 4. Compare how Voltaire has explored the themes of disguise and deceit or love and friendship, and with what effect. Grading Criteria (counts as a writing grade): Udemy posts (on time; each includes quotation, citation, strong analytical explanation OR on time; uses the reply feature correctly, respectful and tactful in tone, expands upon an idea or offers new suggestions and backs them up; doesn’t just agree or disagree, includes quotation, citation (4 total)) – 15 pts each = 60pts Response to prompt - (includes prompt number AND copies and pastes the prompt itself, mechanics, quotations, citations, specific examples, formal language, clear argument, addresses the question/prompt, essay – minimum 5 paragraphs) - 30 pts Posting everything to turnitin by 7:30 on prompt response due date (keep a running Word doc with your Udemy posts then your response to the prompt) – 10 pts Total – 100 pts
