*****Do not use quotations more than once (meaning, do not use a quotation from
your Udemy posts in your response to the prompt).******
Round #3: Choose one of the prompts and respond in an essay (minimum 5 para.). The
essay should be typed and posted to turnitin.com (along with your Round #1 & #2 posts
in a Word doc). Remember that this is a piece of formal writing, so you should avoid
personal pronouns like “I,” “me,” and “you.” You should integrate a quotation in each
body paragraph and you should include specific examples from the novel to support your
argument. *Please double space your response. Make sure you read the entire novel
before selecting and responding to the prompt of your choice.
Prompts:
1. Discuss the part played by minor characters in Candide, indicating what
you think are the effects of their presence.
2. “In literature the concept of ‘home’ is often used to locate the thoughts,
memories, and dreams of humankind.” In the light of this quotation,
explore the ways in which home is used in Candide.
3. How has Voltaire explored the relationship between experience and
understanding? Refer to Candide in your response.
4. Compare how Voltaire has explored the themes of disguise and deceit or
love and friendship, and with what effect.
