The Scarlet Ibis
By James Hurst
You will choose a topic and write an in-class
essay about that topic on Friday. Your task
today is to write an introduction for that
essay and to gather quotes from the story
that you will use in that essay. You may work
with a partner on this essay. If you prefer to
work alone, that is also acceptable.
Step#1- Choose a topic
Topic Choices:
A. The scarlet ibis is a major symbol in the short story — it is a real bird in the story, but it
is also a symbol of something else. It is clear that the writer wants us to see similarities
between Doodle and the fallen bird. In a five paragraph expository essay, discuss specific
ways that Doodle and the scarlet ibis are alike and how the bird could be seen as a symbol
of Doodle and his unusual spirit.
B. “The Scarlet Ibis” reveals a truth about the effects of love and pride. Explain three
problems that arise in the story when “Brother’s” pride gets in the way of his love for his
brother. Explain how these problems are rooted in pride.
Step #2- Write an introduction
Start by introducing the
main concept and building
our interest in that concept.
This is called the “hook”
because you are grabbing
our interest.
Lead the reader into the
thesis statement.
The last sentence in your
introduction is your thesis
statement.
Step #3- Homework- Essay Preparation (Start this in class!)
 Your task is to write out your introduction if you have not already done so, and find
three examples in the story that support the thesis statement that you have chosen.
 You will follow an essay template in class tomorrow to write your essay. Your essay
must include quotes from the text.
 An “A” essay will include at least three quotes and will be five paragraphs in length.
 To earn a “B” or a “C”, you must include at least two quotes in your essay.
You will have the weekend to add to your essay. (If you are working with a partner, it is
your responsibility to organize how any parts of this will be completed over the weekend.
We will review/edit a draft of your essay in class on Monday. The final essay will be due on
Tuesday.
