What is CAPS? Blue Valley Schools’ Center for Advanced Professional Studies (CAPS), is a nationally recognized, innovative high school program. Students fast forward into their future and are fully immersed in a professional culture, solving real world problems, using industry standard tools and are mentored by actual employers, all while receiving high school and college credit. CAPS is an example of how business, community and public education can partner to produce personalized learning experiences that educate the workforce of tomorrow, especially in high skill, high demand jobs. CAPS by the Numbers CAPS first school year in 2009-2010 started with 250 students, 79 mentors, and 104 business partners. In five years the program has grown to more than 800 students, 200 mentors, and nearly 400 business partners. CAPS has received written endorsements from 50 colleges and universities throughout the country and is actively consulting with school districts across the country to replicate the CAPS model. What types of courses are offered at CAPS? CAPS is driven by the changing workforce needs of industry, therefore instructors and CAPS Business Partners collaborate to develop coursework. CAPS curriculum is dynamic, constantly evolving to follow industry trends and market changes using a copyrighted rapid prototyping curriculum development process. Current CAPS programs include: Accelerator– Global Foods Bioscience – Molecular Medicine and Bioengineering, Environmental Science and Animal Health, Bioscience Research Business Technology and Media – Global Business (Marketing and Business Development, Leadership and Global Economics, World Language), Technology Solutions and Software Engineering, iMedia, Filmmaking, Digital Design and Photography Engineering – Civil Engineering and Architecture, Digital Electronics, Robotics, Aerospace Engineering, Computer Integrated Manufacturing Human Services – Teacher Education, Law and Public Safety Medicine & Healthcare – Sports Medicine, Foundations of Medicine, Veterinary Medicine Business Partners and Mentors Business partners are at the heart of the CAPS program. The program features problem-based learning brought in by business partners. There is no minimum threshold of involvement and finding the right fit for each business partner is a priority. Mentors and guest speakers are always in demand as well as project and internship opportunities.
