MULTIPLYING BY POWERS OF TEN
Method 1: Evaluate the power.
137 x 103
137 x (10 x 10 x 10)
137 x 1,000
137,000
 Method 2: Use mental math. (My Favorite!!!)
137 x 103
The positive 3 exponent tells you to
move the decimal 3 spaces to the
137.
right.

NEGATIVE EXPONENTS
If a positive exponent moves the decimal to the
right, what does a negative exponent do?
 It moves the decimal to the left!
 Just remember…

if the exponent is positive, the standard form
number will be very BIG, and
Ex. 2.37 x 105 = 237,000
if the exponent is negative, the standard form
number will be very small.
Ex. 2.37 x 10-5 = .0000237
SCIENTIFIC NOTATION

For a number to be written in scientific notation,
it must keep to the following rules:
The first number
must be a number
between 1 and 10.
8.2 x 103
It must be the product
of two numbers.
You must multiply
by a power of 10.

the right.

The exponent of 5 tells you to move the decimal 5 spaces to
the right.

5.62 x 10-4 =
The exponent of -4 tells you to move the decimal 4 spaces to
the left.
