To earn different parts of their ice cream cone treats, students will take the “Sweet Facts” timed quizzes for each level - multiplication facts 2-12. All students will start with the “Sweet Facts - x2” quiz. The teacher times the Students for 30 seconds to 1 minute, depending on the level of your students, allowing them to complete the quiz. After the allotted amount of time., all students must stop working. Any student who completes all the questions and passes the quiz with a 100% moves on to the next level. If a student does not finish or does not get a 100% will re-take the quiz the next time it is given. Ideally the quiz should be given once a day during your multiplication unit. Students will progress at their own rate. Some students will need to repeat a level a few times before passing while others will breeze through and reach their “Sweet Facts - x12” rather quickly. You may choose to reduce the amount of problems a student needs to complete or extend the time given as you see fit for individual students. Keep several copies of each “Sweet Facts” level so that students can take the quiz that they need each day. As the quizzes get going, you will have students working at different levels. Once a student passes the final level, “Sweet Facts - x12,” you can reward them with an actual ice cream cone. You can choose to have one big party at the end of the unit, or reward students as they finish all the levels. If you decide to give your students the ice cream cone treat as they earn it instead of having everyone wait to the end, having an ice cream party each Friday for students who passes their 12’s that week will help manage this part of the process. 3 Cut out, laminate and use this label as a header for your “Multiplication Sweets” board where students are building and adding on to their cones. 4 This is the what the final product of the ice cream cone will look like once students have passed all of the levels. Use page 8 to track what levels students have passed by checking off the levels they have completed.
