Culham Centre for Fusion Energy Power Supplies and Radio Frequency Department at Culham We employ over 70 power electrical and power electronic engineers and technicians. The department supplies power to the JET and MAST nuclear fusion experiments at Culham. Culham is fed from the grid at 400kV and has many large loads using various technologies. For example; multi-megawatt power amplifiers, two 400MW 800tonne flywheel-driven generators, high current and high voltage DC switches in pulsed supplies for plasma heating; highly regulated HV DC supplies for multi-megawatt particle accelerators and radio frequency generators. We have an ongoing need for power electrical engineers and technicians across a range of disciplines. Below are listed posts which have arisen recently and further vacancies are likely to arise now or in the near future. 1. Electrical Engineer/ Power Electronic Engineer • Study modifications and enhancements to the pulsed power supplies used by the JET and MAST machines. • Simulate power and power-electronic systems • Ensure that power supplies plant is available for operational use through the safe provision of plant maintenance, refurbishment, trouble-shooting, testing and upgrades. • Preparation of technical documentation, including design reports, updating site drawings and records, test procedures, risk assessments, safety assessments and method statements. 2. Electrical/Electronic Technicians • Opportunities to work on all type of electronics systems from traditional analogue amplifiers and transistor circuits through to modern control systems with microprocessors and FPGAs. Experience will be gained in the interfacing of such control systems to large power systems and industrial plant. • Providing electronic engineering support for activities including fault finding, repairs, modifications and routine maintenance/calibrations of power supply systems. • Modifications and enhancements to existing pulsed power supply control and instrumentation. Support Plant Responsible Officers with the installation and commissioning of new power supplies systems. • Carry out testing and commissioning activities, injection of protections systems and calibration of electronic control / instrumentation equipment cards and systems for the pulsed power supplies plant.
