People credited with this unit standard are able to examine: a culture in terms of societal characteristics; how culture shapes individual and collective identity; and the implications that concepts of culture have for recreation policy and provision. Explanatory notes Definitions Concepts of culture include spiritual, intellectual, physical, social, and emotional aspects. They are evidenced in rituals, festivals, arts, sport, leisure, and recreation. Culture involves patterns of behaviour, values, and belief systems, and sets boundaries between what is acceptable and not acceptable, and what is legitimate and not legitimate to a particular society. Recreation is an activity through which leisure may be experienced and enjoyed. Recreation involves freely chosen activities engaged in for wellbeing. Recreation activities include: sport, fitness and health, art and crafts, outdoor pursuits, hobbies, continuing education, ngā mahi a te rēhia, and activities with a service orientation. Participation in recreation has individual, community, and social benefits. Selected recreation policy means the recreation policy of the candidate’s workplace. Range characteristics may include – family, religion, ethnicity, industrialisation, community and/or societal structures and processes, living patterns, urban or rural settlement, justice, life stage, lifestyle, values and beliefs, political, economic. Evidence requirements 1.1 A selected culture is examined in terms of its societal characteristics. 1.2 The examination describes the relationships between the identified societal characteristics. Outcome 2 Examine how culture shapes individual and collective identity. Range collective identity may include – belief systems, shared norms and values, common purpose, patterns of communication, rituals. Evidence requirements 2.1 The examination describes the influence of culture upon the individual's identity. 2.2 The examination describes the influencing factors of culture upon collective identity. 2.3 The examination describes the relationships between individual identity, collective identity, and culture. Outcome 3 Examine the implications that concepts of culture have for recreation policy and provision. Evidence requirements 3.1 The examination describes the relationship between culture and concepts of recreation. Range concepts of recreation – time, activity, experience. 3.2 The examination describes a selected recreation policy in terms of culture. 3.3 The examination describes the inter-relationship and influence of culture on recreation policy and provision.
