2. Plant Breeding & Genetics
2.1 Varietal Improvement
Twenty three centres spread over 18 states carried out the varietal development as per the
approved technical programme. The salient achievements during the year in toria (Brassica rapa
var toria), yellow sarson (B. rapa var yellow sarson), gobhi sarson (B. napus), Indian mustard (B.
juncea), karan rai (B. carinata) and taramira (Eruca sativa) 2011-12 are discussed:
2.1.1 Genetic Resource Management
A total of 5,582 accessions comprising toria (619), Indian mustard (4,058), yellow sarson
(455), gobhi sarson (104), brown sarson (41), karan rai (205), taramira (46), Brassica tournefortii
(03), Sinapis alba (02), B. caudatus (03), B.nigra (36), B. oleracea (06), Raphanus sativa (01), R.
caudatus (01), Crambe spp (02), Lepidium spp (01) and Camellina spp (01) were maintained
through appropriate mating system at Bhubaneswar, Dholi, Hisar, Kanpur, Morena, Pantnagar,
S.K. Nagar, Sriganganagar, IARI, New Delhi and Jobner (Table 2.1.1). 627 new accessions of
Indian mustard (456), toria (47), yellow sarson (52), brown sarson (10), B nigra (32), B rugosa (16)
and taramira (24), were collected. 1,038 accessions consisting of 645 of Indian mustard, 115 of
toria, 174 of yellow sarson, 17 of gobhi sarson, 41 of brown sarson, 06 of karan rai and 40 of
taramira were evaluated. On the basis of germplasm evaluation promising donors were identified
for earliness in toria at Bhubaneswar and Pantnagar, tolerant to drought in toria at Bhubaneswar
and for earliness in Indian mustard at Bhubaneswar, tolerance to Alternaria blight at Dholi and
tolerance to aphid in Indian mustard at Bhubaneswar. Three genetic stocks including two of Indian
mustard (B.juncea), BPR 349-9 (INGR No. 11048), DRMR WFM1 (INGR No. 12007) for thermo
tolerance at juvenile stage and white petal colour, respectively and, MCA1 (INGR No. 11049) of
karan rai (B. carinata) for cytoplasm male sterility were registered by Plant Germplasm
Registration Committee during 2011-12, bringing the total number of registered germplasm in
rapeseed-mustard to 45.
2.1.2 Creation of genetic variability through hybridization/ mutagenesis and selection
Creation of variability is the essence and backbone of the breeding programme. To cater the
need of various centers, 109 crosses were attempted in toria, 145 crosses in yellow sarson and 795
crosses in Indian mustard at Morena, Chatha (Jammu), Kanpur, Pantnagar, Dholi, Hisar, IARI,
S.K.Nagar , and Sriganganagar to improve seed yield, earliness, seed size, disease/pest resistance,
quality and high oil content (Table 2.1.2). Selection of superior plants/bulks at different centres was
practiced in toria, yellow sarson and Indian mustard (Table 2.1.2). In toria, development of composites
and reconstituting population after selection were the main objectives. In yellow sarson, hybridization.
Selection from segregating generations was attempted at
Pantnagar and Kanpur. In Indian mustard, 12,256 single plants and 706 bulks were selected from
segregating and advanced generations.
PB 1
2.1.3 Evaluation of advanced breeding lines
Advance breeding lines were evaluated under different station/state /preliminary yield trials
at various centres which have been presented in Table 2.1.3. 148 strains of toria were tested at
Kanpur, Hisar, Morena and Pantnagar. The yield superiority was up to 52.3 % over the check
(Bhawani) at Morena. In yellow sarson, total of 54 strains were tested at Kanpur and Pantnagar.
The yield superiority up to 27.3 % over the check Swarna was recorded at Dholi. In Indian
mustard, 646 strains were evaluated at 7 centres in 34 trials. Yield superiority up to 46.3 % over
the check JD 6 was recorded at Dholi. 12 strains of taramira were evaluated at Jobner and yield
superiority up to 14.1 % over the check, RTM 314 was recorded.
2.1.4 Hybrid/ Mapping populations’ development
In Indian mustard mapping populations for white rust disease were developed at IARI, New
Delhi. CMS and restorer conversion programme for hybrid development has been undertaken at IARI
New Delhi, Hisar, Morena, S.K. Nagar and Pantnagar (Table 2.1.2),
2.2 Breeder seed production
Indents of 48.88 q breeder seed of 53 rapeseed-mustard varieties and two parental lines of
hybrid, NRCHB 506 were received from Department of Agriculture and Cooperation (DAC), Ministry
of Agriculture, Govt. of India for production during 2011-12. Allocation of breeder seed production of
all varieties except Ragini was made by Directorate of Rapeseed-Mustard Research, Bharatpur to
different AICRPRM centres. Against the indent, 132.83 q breeder seed including carry over was
produced, indicating a surplus availability of 74.85 q. Breeder seed of six centrally released varieties
Jagannath, Pusa Mustard 21, Pusa Mustard 22, DRMR 601 of Indian mustard, NRCYS 05-02 of
yellow sarson and Kalyani of brown sarson and two state released varieties viz., ELM 079 and PBR
210 of Indian mustard could not be produced. Further, less quantity of three varieties; Navgold,
Jhumka and Agrani was produced. In addition, 119.03 q breeder seed of 41 varieties was also
reported from different centres. The centre and variety wise details of breeder seed production are
reported in Table 2.2.
