STUDY ABROAD & Registration for UF classes with prerequisites
If you fulfilled a prerequisite through Study Abroad but are blocked from registering online for the
course, it is because the foreign institution’s course number on your record is not recognized as
satisfying the prerequisite.
A departmental override of the block can be arranged by your contacting the Undergraduate
Coordinator with this information:
UF course prefix & title, section number
Where & when you took the pre-requisite
Did you take the Chinese Placement Test on returning to UF? (see below)
Your UFID number
STUDY ABROAD & Chinese Language Placement Testing
If you studied Chinese language abroad and wish to (a) continue to the next level at UF, or (b) apply the
study-abroad as substitute for a UF-language course (without continuing to the next level), you must
register for the “Chinese Placement Test” that is offered at the start of each semester. Go to the
department website and click on “Chinese Placement Test” to register in advance for the free test.
STUDY ABROAD fulfillment of Non-Language Courses for the Major / Minor
Declared majors & minors must have the approval of the Undergraduate Coordinator and signature on
the UFIC “green form” or that of any EAC faculty member. If you are not a declared major or minor,
you need UFIC’s signature only. BUT if you believe you may later declare the major or minor, consult
the Undergrad Coordinator in advance and retain a copy of your study-abroad transcript, syllabi, etc., in
order to be able retroactively to request the application of study abroad to degree requirements.
M I N O R R E Q U I R E M E N T S I N E A C (East Asian LL, Chinese)
A. Minimal language-level requirement: Completion of CHI 2230 & CHI 2231
(“Intermediate
Chinese 1, 2”), or the equivalent. This requirement may be filled by CHI 2340 & 2341 (“Chinese for
Heritage Learners 1, 2), provided that the instructor certifies
the student achieved the equivalent
of CHI 2231.
B. Nine (9) additional credits in courses at 3000-level or above with prefixes CHI, CHT, CHW,
and also JPN, JPT, JPW. These courses are limited to upper-division language and nonlanguage courses in the Dept. of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures; it excludes courses
from other departments.
Note that 9 credits of the MINOR must be earned at UF (for the Major, 15 credits). An exception to the
9-credit rule will be requested by the Undergraduate Coordinator for transfer credits from the summer
study-abroad “UF in Beijing,” where the same syllabus and required textbooks as at UF are used.
Returning Intermediate 1, 2 minors should consult the Undergrad. Coordinator to arrange the waiver.
At “UF in Beijing,” students may complete intensive “Intermediate 1, 2” or “Advanced 1, 2” plus 6
other credits toward the minor or major. At “UF in Chengdu” students may complete intensive
“Beginning 1, 2” with the UF syllabus and required textbooks, and earn 6 credits toward the minor or
major (the Beginning class, at 1000-level, does not count toward the minor but provides eligibility for
advancing to the Intermediate level).
