This will become inevitable since we are about to have some time away from school. This can be a great time to promote a sense of family togetherness. Quality interactions can be increased when family members make efforts to be together. Planning family events and spending weeknights or weekends together often create lifetime bonds. Here are four easy ways to increase family unity: Make a family bulletin board. This can be used to update family members on different things that are occurring in each others lives or to just communicate a simple message or greeting. Give your children opportunities to express ideas. Encourage your children to list things they would like to do as a family. Take learning trips. This could include a camping trip, a getaway weekend, trips to museums, art galleries, or the local library. Limit commercial consumption. Encourage your children to make gifts for family and/or friends. Encourage them to help provide to a family in need. By trying some of these things, you can increase family togetherness and encourage a positive family outlook. On behalf of the staff at Harwood Elementary School, We wish you a Joyous and Peaceful Holiday Season. EIGHT GIFTS THAT DON’T COST A CENT! The gift of listening – But you must really listen, no interrupting, no daydreaming, no planning your response. Just listening! 1. The gift of affection – Be generous with appropriate hugs, kisses, pats on the back, and handholds. Let these small actions demonstrate the love you have for family and friends. 2. The gift of laughter - Clip cartoons. Share great articles and funny stories. Your gift will say, “I love to laugh with you.” 3. The gift of a written note – It can be simple, “I love you” or “Thanks for the help” note, or a full sonnet. A brief handwritten note may be remembered for a lifetime and may even change a life. 4. The gift of a compliment – A simple and sincere, “You look good in red,” You did a super job,” or “That was a wonderful meal,” can make someone’s day. 5. The gift of a favor – Every day, go out of your way to do something kind. 6. The gift of solitude – There are times when we want nothing better than to be left alone. Be sensitive to those times and give the gift of solitude to others. 7. The gift of a cheerful disposition – The easiest way to feel good is to make others feel good. Entrance Our normal student entry time is at 8:35 a.m. For children's safety and health, please don't have students arrive before 8:35 a.m. If you wish to leave your child earlier, you may leave him/her at Latch Key which costs $3.75 per hour. A child must be pre-registered. If necessary, the parent may register their child that day but cannot just leave a child without registering. There is a $35.00 non-refundable registration fee. Door safeties let students in at 8:35 a.m. and stay on duty until the tardy bell rings at 8:47 a.m. If arrival takes place after that time, please use the front doors and report to office. We appreciate parents following the required traffic flow and honoring the signs. It makes it so much safer for the children, Page 4 and adults as well. Please remember, students are not allowed to walk across the parking lot by themselves. Snow And Ice!! Snowball throwing can be very dangerous. There is no snow-ball throwing on the way to school, while at school, or on the way home from school. Snow piles that may surround the school can be huge and inviting to students. Unfortunately, students do not see the danger of slipping on the parking lot or cutting themselves on the icy chunks hidden in the snow because of the rough play that tends to happen. Since we will be informing students not to throw snowballs and stay off the piles of snow around the building, we hope you would discuss these rules with your child to help insure their safety. Luther King, Jr. – January 17, 2011 (No school) Martin Luther King fought for the rights of his people. He fought for those not free. He fought for the poor. He fought for those who needed help. But Martin Luther King was a man of peace. The fighting man was, in truth, a man of peace. December 2010/January 2011 Page 5 .
