Theme 2 Fairground Models
You will need to collect…
We will provide…
A list of websites can be obtained by clicking on session 1 resource.
Please note: this theme is very resource heavy and requires the teacher to set up several investigations using construction
materials. You may need to beg, borrow, steal materials from other classes or even other schools in order to have enough to
allow the chn to thoroughly explore, investigate and achieve. The web list contains links to websites where you can view and
buy some of the more popular models. In addition, access to a complete model Ferris Wheel is essential (K’Nex is highly
recommended).
In addition you will need a dedicated Control Technology piece of software (such as Flowol) – the website list contains links
to several sites that enable you to buy/ trial various software although you may find that your school/ partnership or
county recommend a specific one. For the purposes of demonstrating and using simulations the sessions rely on Flowol
(there is a great demo version teachers can investigate first), mainly because the free simulation is a Ferris Wheel which
fits in perfectly with this theme. It is however, possible to adapt the sessions to your software and perhaps just use the
Flowol as an example for demonstration purposes.

For Sessions 6 - 8 you will need a dedicated Data Handling piece of software: we recommend Data Sweet (there is a great
demo version teachers can investigate first) but it should be possible to adapt the sessions to your software. You will need
to ensure the software allows the chn to make their own database, add their own fields and then be able to perform AND
and OR and if possible NOT queries/ searches. Data Sweet allows for all of this and the resources give help/ advice on its
use
