Organizing your References: An Introduction to EndNote:

Today’s practical will introduce you to EndNote, a tool for gathering references, and
using (and re-using) them, as you create academic essays / reports during your time
here at UL (and beyond).
You will find that, over time, this tool will save you huge amounts of time. For
example, once you have put a reference in EndNote, you can re-use it many times,
without having to type it in over and over again.
There are 6 main parts to the first part of today’s practical:






An Introduction to EndNote
Starting EndNote
Creating an EndNote Library
Adding References to that EndNote Library (both manually and automatically)
Viewing these references
Using the References in EndNote to populate the reference section in a word
document
For each of these sections, the lab supervisor will help you (as a team) in the 2nd hour
through the slides already prepared by the library:

To start, go to the website above, and go through the Introduction (slides 1-3), starting
EndNote (slide 6), and creating a new library (slides 7-8).
Try to add a reference to your library, manually (slides 9-10). Make sure to add all the
fields expected by the UL guide for references: Cite It Right
(http://www.ul.ie/~library/pdf/citeitright.pdf).
You will then insert 3 of your own references (from your module essay) manually.
Import a reference automatically, from the search database 'science direct' in the
library. (slides 19-23 – the ‘Direct Export’ technique only). The link to science direct
is: http://www.sciencedirect.com/
Try an automatic import for another article you want in your essay. You will find that
most of the papers you want to reference can be imported easily into Endnote this
way.
Follow slides 11, 13-15, to view the references you have inserted using different
styles (any styles of your choice as long as one is the UL ‘Harvard’ standard).
Attach a .pdf file to one of your references (slides 43-45). For the sake of this
exercise, any pdf will do.
Finally, follow slides 54-60 to create a bibliography for a word document.
