ENGLISH AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE (EFL) PROGRAMMES FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS STELLENBOSCH UNIVERSITY 2004 INTENSIVE EFL for students who focus mainly on developing their English language proficiency 24 hours of instruction per week students are tested and placed in one of 6 levels* courses run continuously from February through December. *Placement Test and Course Levels Prior to each course, students are tested and placed in one of the following 6 levels: Beginning – for students with little or no proficiency Pre-Intermediate – for students with some basic proficiency Intermediate – for students with a working proficiency High Intermediate – for students with good proficiency who need to develop further Pre-Advanced– for students who want to master the language with subtlety and nuance Academic Advanced – for students who need to qualify for international tests and and further degree work EFL SPECIAL PURPOSE COURSES open to higher level students and professionals courses run pre- and between semesters courses: Academic Writing Skills 3 week intensive (60 hours) International Business Communication 1 week intensive (25 hours) TOEFL Preparation Course 3 days intensive (15 hours) Language Testing within Stellenbosch University and cannot be used for admission to other institutions.) Evaluation Each course uses continuous assessment and ends with oral and written evaluation of student achievement. Upon request, students will receive a transcript for successfully completed courses. Class attendance of at least 80% and an overall average of 50% are required for a basic pass mark. 2004 Calendar ENGLISH PROFICIENCY AND PLACEMENT TEST Prior to registration, all new international students have to write an English Proficiency and Placement Test during the orientation programmes. This test can be written before the start of Blocks 1 - 6 to indicate at which level a student can benefit most. (Dates under 2004 Calendar further in the brochure). 2004 INTENSIVE EFL ITP TOEFL Stellenbosch University International Office is approved to give the International Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), under the Institutional Testing Programme (ITP). It is given twice yearly, usually in July and December, and can be scheduled more often if needed. Content of courses Intensive EFL All of the intensive courses are taught in an integrated way, combining listening, speaking, reading, writing, and cultural competence. We include some in-depth focus on the various language skills. The instructional approach is mainly communicative, honouring the person of the learners with their varying needs and goals. We include creative and critical thinking skills, and we incorporate some South African themes. With students and faculty working together, we aim to build an autonomous, caring, and achieving learning community. field trips to Cape Town, historical sites and other places of interest. Some practical tasks are included which require the students to use language in authentic contexts, within both the University and the surrounding community of Stellenbosch. The courses empower the students to use language rather than just know about it, for solid proficiency. Cost of EFL Courses for 2004 Academic Writing Skills The focus is on success in post-graduate studies or writing for publication. It includes several types of academic writing, such as report writing, essay writing, and exam writing. Academic reading strategies are covered. The course uses a process approach. A Writers’ Workshop and tutorials are built in. International Business Communication This upper-level intensive course is for people whose first language is not English and who wish to improve their business communication skills. Content includes understanding organisations, staff issues, business meetings, efficient report reading, customers, group presentations and global business. Active participation is required.
