Spanish language and culture course (Beginners Level) Profile: a basic knowledge of Spanish Objectives: - Acquire a basic knowledge of the structures of the Spanish language - Reach a level of communication, which enables you to manage daily life situations. Methodology: Our method, which is based on every day communication situations, enables the students to communicate efficiently. During the process of “teachinglearning”, we put emphasis on the grammar, the vocabulary, the pronunciation and the written expression of real communication situations. Materials: The book “Así es el español básico” as well as exercises and activities made by the teachers. Academic Schedule: (all year) 1st and 2nd hr.: - Spanish Language 3rd hour: - Vocabulary building 4th hour, choose between: - Language Laboratories - Communication Activities 5th hour, choose between: - Language Laboratories - Communication Activities Note: - Compulsory lessons: 1st, 2nd and 3rd hour - Optional lessons: The student can choose between the different options that Spanish Learning proposes for the 4th and 5th hour. Academic Schedule: (summer) 1st and 2nd: - Spanish Language 3rd hour: - Vocabulary Building th 4 hour, choose between: - Language Laboratories - Communication Activities 5th hour, choose between: - Language Laboratories - Communication Activities 6th hour: - Conversation activities outside the classroom Note: - Compulsory lessons: 1st, 2nd and 3rd hour. - Optional lessons: The student can choose between the different options that Spanish Learning proposes for the 4th, 5th and 6th hour. 1 Spanish Language (40 hours) (Compulsory lesson) Objetives: To provide the student with the necessary instruments to achieve or improve the “Communication Skills” in Spanish. Content: - Communicative functions - Grammatical constituents - Vocabulary constituents. The maximum number of students per class is 15. Subjects: First week: - The Spanish phonetic and graphic system. - Basic communication functions: grammatical and vocabulary constituents. - Verbs: Present Indicative (the most common regular and irregular verbs). - Personal Pronouns. - The structures: ‘estar’ + gerund/present participle, ‘tener que’ + Infinitive. - Revision and improvement. - Learning and communication strategies. Second week: - Basic communication functions: grammatical and vocabulary constituents. - Interrogative Pronouns (questions and answers). - Phonetics and Pronunciation. - Verbs: Future Indicative (the most common regular and irregular verbs). - Characteristics and physical and emotional state (‘ser’ and ‘estar’). - Structures: ‘ir a’ + Infinitive. - Revision and improvement. - Learning and communication strategies. Third week: - Basic communication functions: grammatical and vocabulary constituents. - Pronouns (subject and object). - Possessives and demonstratives (adjectives and pronouns). - Pronunciation: intonation in Spanish. - Verbs: Past tense. Preterit Perfect of Indicative (the most common regular and irregular verbs). - To give instructions: The use of Imperative (the most frequent forms). - The structures: ‘acabar de’ + Infinitive. - Revision and improvement. - Learning strategies. Fourth week: - Basic communication functions: grammatical and vocabulary constituents. - Pronunciation: sounds, which are different from the mother tongue. - Verbs: Past tense: Imperfect and Indefinite (basic differences). - Introduction to Subjunctive: the most common structures with presence Subjunctive. - Introduction to the use of Conditional: courtesy. - Revision and improvement. - Learning strategies. 2 Book: “Así es el español básico”. Ed. Univ. Salamanca. Vocabulary Enlargement (20 hours) (Compulsory lesson) Objectives: Introduction and enlargement of vocabulary Content: Vocabulary of the common semantic areas. Subjects: - Semantic areas: acquisition, practice and revision of the most frequent lexis - At home - In the street - Food - Clothes - The body - The classroom - The weather - Characteristics - Emotional states - Basic communication functions - Strategies of how to learn and enlarge vocabulary The content of this class are closely related to the Spanish Language class. Language Laboratory (20 hours) (Optional lesson) Objetives: - The Spanish phonetics. - The basic structures of the Spanish language. - Comprehension improvement. - Reinforcement of the knowledge already acquired. Content: - Phonetic training. - Listening comprehensions. - Reinforcement activities. Subjects: - The phonetic and phonological system in Spanish. - Individual training of pronunciation in Spanish. - Working with sounds, which are different from the student’s mother tongue. - Intonation in Spanish. - Working with the comprehension of the “message” in Spanish: Techniques for listening comprehension. This class takes place in our Language Laboratory. We can offer the latest methods and technical media, which will always be used with the assistance of a qualified teacher. 3 Communication Activities (20 hours) (Optional lesson) Objectives: - To practice the language in real communication contexts. - To work with the four communication skills: speak / listen / read / write. Contents: - Conversation. - Reading comprehension. - Writing exercises. Subjects: - Interaction in real communication situations. - Practice with the formal constituents in relation to real opportunities of using the Spanish language. - Exposition, analysis and reproduction of real examples. - Improvement of the communication skills. 4
