Student Travel Application Policies *This application is primarily intended to support travel associated with the dissemination of research findings or scholarly products that have largely been completed. If the execution of your scholarly activity itself requires travel (e.g. to field sites or performance venues), please use the Research/Scholarship Application.* Normally only a single student will be funded to attend a meeting per multi-authored project. If funded, the student must present the research at the Juniata Liberal Arts Symposium. Only a single presentation per student will be funded per academic year. General Guidelines for Completing the Application: Each individual student benefiting from SRFC funds must apply individually for those funds, even if the research is collaborative. Refer to the example application for appropriateness of project descriptions. Projects vary widely in their focus. Please consult with your research sponsor(s) for assistance in determining what may be appropriate for your project. Projects involving human subject research generally require IRB approval. http://www.juniata.edu/academics/research/irb.html Projects studying (non-human) live vertebrates generally require IACUC approval. http://www.juniata.edu/services/safety/JuniataAnimalCareandUse.html SRFC has a $35 per diem limit for food. A general guideline of $5 for breakfast, $10 for lunch, and $20 for dinner is assumed in the per diem. Gas should be figured as mileage times Juniata’s current allowance - $.55 Process After emailing your form to the Committee Chairperson (see webpage for current Committee membership information) the SRFC members will review your application. Please note that is the norm for the committee to request revisions. As revisions add time to the review process you will need to submit your application several weeks ahead of the start of your research. The Committee Chairperson emails the applicant and advisor/sponsor with the committee’s decision. Successful applicants will be provided with a contact person to handle administration of the award (e.g. policies and procedures for reimbursement or cash advances, maintaining receipts, returning unused funds, etc.). Successful applicants are required to present their research at the Liberal Arts Symposium. Additional NCUR Policies The Provost will support the attendance of up to two faculty members to serve as chaperones, to learn about scholarship in their fields and meet like-minded faculty from other institutions. We expect student presenters to attend the entire conference, listening to their colleagues from Juniata and elsewhere, in their own fields and in others, to appreciate the variety of student research going on across the country. If students do not inform the NCUR coordinator that their abstracts have been accepted to NCUR in a timely manner as specified by the institutional announcement, they will not be funded. Frequently Asked Questions I am seeking funding to cover travel to a performance activity I will be participating in, is this the correct form? Probably not. If the focal point of your scholarly activity is the performance you are travelling to, you should use the Research / Scholarship Application. How much is the maximum individual award? SRFC generally observes a $500 cap per presentation. Additional funding may be available from individual academic departments. Will the SRFC pay for me to attend a conference or a training workshop if I am not presenting original research? No, given the limits of our funds we reserve conference funding for students that are presenting papers, posters, or other original work. Will the SRFC pay for my certification exam? We do not fund application fees for students taking certification exams (e.g. Praxis, programming, Actuarial, etc.) I will be studying abroad during NCUR. Will the SRFC cover the extra expenses to return stateside and attend? If a student is abroad but is accepted to present at NCUR we will offer them the same dollar amount of travel support spent per student to travel to NCUR from JC. We would still pay for meals and lodging at NCUR of course. Does the faculty sponsor’s statement matter? Yes! It is quite important in offering context for the project. The SRFC encourages faculty sponsors to offer useful additional information for interpreting the project. Can I submit a proposal for ongoing or completed research? Often, yes. As there is no opportunity for feedback to the research process, the willingness of the committee to reimburse students for recently completed projects depends on the appropriateness of the research, the reason for the late application, and the discretion of the committee members. updated 8/2014
