Explanatory notes 1 It is intended that practice situations will be in controlled training environments. 2 It is intended that the candidate’s knowledge in outcome 1 will be based around at least two contrasting texts selected to demonstrate different genres and/or styles, and that the acting application of outcome 2 will be demonstrated through performance of at least three characters from those texts. 3 Laban, Feldenkrais, and Alexander may be used as the standard references for movement in evidence requirement 2.3. 4 Definitions Comprehensive knowledge and developed techniques of acting implies wide acting knowledge and application of techniques. Typically, this unit standard would be part of an advanced course at tertiary level. Outcomes and evidence requirements Outcome 1 Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of acting theory. Range demonstration may be oral, written, visual, or any combination. Evidence requirements 1.1 Demonstration identifies and explains distinguishing features and historical background of contrasting theories of acting methodology. Range 1.2 Demonstration shows comprehensive knowledge and use of voice production techniques, for acting purposes, to produce free, clear, and unstrained sound; and to realise creative and emotional expression in a range of drama contexts. Range 1.3 voice production techniques include but are not limited to – diaphragmatic breathing and support, exercises to release vocal tension and improve vocal fitness, projection, dynamics, singing skills, safe warm-ups; drama contexts may include but are not limited to – song, dialects, character creation. Demonstration shows comprehensive knowledge of a range of stage movement techniques for acting purposes. Range 1.4 at least two contrasting theories. techniques include but are not limited to – safe and effective warm-up routines, exercises to release body tension, movement through different spatial levels, integrated breath and body movements, movement sequences, alignment with actors and staging, flexibility, control. Demonstration shows comprehensive knowledge of dramatic shape of different texts for acting purposes. Range at least two texts featuring different genres and/or styles; dramatic shape includes but is not limited to – characters, setting in time and place, genre, structural format, theme(s) and/or motif(s). Range at least three characters from the selected texts; performance objectives that – are appropriate to genre and/or style, energise and enhance performance, meet the various demands of role, interact and connect with other actors in ensemble situation. Outcome 2 Apply comprehensive knowledge and developed techniques of acting with consistency in practice situations. Range practice situations – three controlled training sessions; acting experience – three selected characters. Evidence requirements 2.1 Acting practice applies theories of acting methodology and supports dramatic shape and the performance objectives, with consistency. 2.2 Acting practice portraying character roles applies a comprehensive range of voice production techniques, with consistency. Range 2.3 Acting practice portraying character roles demonstrates developed movement techniques and characteristics, with consistency. Range 2.4 techniques include but are not limited to – diaphragmatic breathing and support, clear and unstrained vocal tone, varying pace of delivery while maintaining clarity of tone, techniques to release and control physical tension, singing skills (if appropriate); appropriate to character roles – projection, placement, pronunciation, resonance, voice range, dynamics. movement techniques may include but are not limited to – integrated breath and body movements, movement through different spatial levels, movement sequences appropriate to role, techniques to release bodily tension, dancing skills and styles (if appropriate); movement characteristics include but are not limited to – flexibility, suppleness, mobility, fitness, control. Acting practice involving improvisation demonstrates the utilisation of observation, imagination, concentration, cooperation, and listening skills. This unit standard is expiring. Assessment against the standard must take place by the last date for assessment set out below.
