Welcome to Spanish 1 for Spanish Speakers. I look forward to working with each of you and having a fun and successful year. Although everyone in this class can already speak Spanish. We are going to work together to enhance our vocabulary as well as our reading and writing skills. This class introduces different literature as well as culture to create a better understanding of the Spanish Language. The class will be taught primarily in Spanish and students are to use Spanish as their only means of communication. This course stresses the New California Foreign Language Framework: A Standards-Based Instruction Approach: Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing in the Spanish Language. Through the use of the target language, students develop an understanding of the basic Spanish Language and the culture being studied. OBJECTIVES: The student will be able to: 1. Communicate comfortably using a richer vocabulary with native Spanish speakers. 2. Distinguish verb tenses and use them appropriately. 3. Write a coherent essay in target language. 4. Describe a variety of cultural similarities /differences shared by Spanish speaking countries. 5. Discuss a variety literature in different genres in target language. 6. Discuss the history and society of different Spanish speaking countries. Be seated and working on the warm-up by the time the bell rings. Participation is important in class and will count for a portion of your grade. Keep all class materials in a folder. Gum, food, or drink is not permitted in class (with the exception of water). CLASS REQUIREMENTS: It is the responsibility of every student to keep a separate 3 ring binder for Spanish class and bring their textbook everyday unless otherwise informed by teacher. WARM UPS/AGENDAS: Warm ups are given daily and will be found on the board. Warm ups are to done on the Warm ups & Agendas sheet provided and will be turned in bi-weekly. If you arrive late or are absent you may not make up warm ups however it your responsibility to ask a classmate for the agenda. QUIZZES TESTS: There will be quizzes given on a weekly basis. Make up quizzes will be for excused absences only. There will Chapter Tests as well as a cumulative final. The tests and final are very important and more difficult to make up (as it will incorporate a dictation portion) therefore attendance is very important. LAB/PROJECTS: The class will use the Foreign Language Laboratory throughout the semester to do a variety of activities using visual and audio equipment as well as the Internet in the target language. There are no make-ups for missing Lab days. There will also be a variety of class projects. Projects will include recipes, magazine covers, maps, and research in Spanish culture. ASSESSMENTS: Quizzes Exams Dictations Essays Foreign Language Lab Homework Participation Skits Projects Oral Presentations Attendance Final Exam Note-taking Oral Exams Interview with Teachers GRADING: Grading is based on a points system. Students will always be aware of their grade in the class. Note: Progress reports will be sent home every 2-3 weeks and must be signed by parent and returned ASAP. A 90-100 C 70-79 F 59 AND BELOW B 80-89 D 60 69 MAKE UP WORK/LATE WORK: Make up work will be accepted for excused absences only and is due the following day after your return to class. You are responsible for inquiring after any make up assignments. Please have the phone number or email of at least two other students in your class. Any other work not turned in on time is accepted only one day late from the original due date and will be worth only half credit. EXTRA CREDIT: There may be a limited amount of extra credit given in the class at the discretion of the teacher. Extra credit will not substitute for missing work. ABSCENCES/TARDIES: If you are absent, it is your responsibility to look at the CHS homework page or to call someone in your class to find out the assignment and due date. Tardiness is strictly enforced. The doors to class will be closed and you will be required to obtain a tardy slip before being allowed to enter. If you are late to class more than 3 times it will affect your participation grade in the class. The CHS tardy policy will be enforced. HALL PASS: One hall pass is given to each student at the beginning of each semester. If the student does not use the hall pass during the semester they may turn it in at the end of the semester for a possible 20 extra credit points. Lost or misplaced passes will not be replaced. A hall pass may not be used to purchase snacks or drinks. Any snacks or drinks brought back to class will be thrown away. CHEATING POLICY: Remember cheating is not permitted and doing so has serious consequences. If it appears or it is obvious that cheating has occurred the assignment/test will be taken away. The student will receive an F for the assignment/test as well as for the day. Parents/Guardians will be notified and a conference will be requested. Student will be asked to go to K-78 and additional disciplinary action will be taken. DISRUPTIVE BEHAVIOR: Disruptive behavior is considered any behavior that prevents the teacher from teaching a lesson as well as disrupts students from learning a lesson. This includes pagers, and cell phones ringing during class. Such behavior will be dealt with in the following manner. 1) A student will be given a verbal warning. 2) Student will lose participation points for the day. 3) Student’s parents/guardians will be contacted for a conference. 4) Student will be assigned detention. 5) Student will be given a referral and sent to K-78 or A-10. EXTRA HELP: Extra help is always available. Please come see me before or after class so that we can schedule an appointment before school, at lunch or after school.
