TECHNICKÁ UNIVERZITA V KOŠICIACH THE TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY OF KOŠICE www.tuke.sk European Student Guide External Relations and Marketing Office The activities included in this guide are being carred out with the assistance of the Commission of the European Communities within the framework of the LLP Erasmus programme 1 My dear young friends , education does not know any state boundaries , neither it knows any differences among nations, and within the globalization of labor markets creates the best conditions for the students and graduates mobility. The Technical University of Košice is the kind of College that has had traditionally its doors open for all university students from the Slovak Republic , but also from abroad . It is conditioned by the fact , that in its offer of study branches and study programs at its nine faculties , besides the standard technical, economical and art ones , there are also such ones , that are unique within Slovakia , and within the branches of metallurgical and mining technologies , also unique in Europe . All the faculties and work places at the Technical University of Košice are trying to keep pace with the development in education in the countries of the European Union and create conditions for the students and scientific-pedagogical workers mobility. The partnerships are oriented especially on traditionally acknowledged universities in the states of Middle and Eastern Europe . This purpose also serves the Association of Carpathian Region Universities , in which the Technical University of Košice is not only an active member but also its founder . On the other side , the projects of the European Union in the field of university education , science and research made it possible for the workers , but also the students of our college to establish firm contacts with colleagues and work places in the countries of Western Europe . The Košice-City and the surrounding region offer a lot of opportunities for cultural, social and sport activities . Košice is a multicultural city where all the visitors to it feel almost as good as at home after a short period of time . It is conditioned not only by the fact that Košice has had its long tradition but also due to the fact that it lies at the crossroad of traditional business routs from the North to the South , and from the East to the West . People from many nationalities and religious beliefs meet here . They are tolerant to each other and they distinguish themselves with a typical Slovak attribute - the hospitality . 2 My dear young friends , let me first invite you to spend and experience some beautiful and pleasant days at our Technical University of Košice. I would like to express my persuasion that your stay at the work places , in laboratories , lecture halls, clubs and sport grounds will contribute to your professional growth , as well as to gaining the persuasion that we are a good guarantee of your professional growth and for many of you we will become good partners and frank friends for many years . So, welcome to Košice ! Dr.h.c.prof.Ing. Anton Čižmár, CSc. GENERAL INFORMATION THE CITY OF KOŠICE Košice, www.kosice.sk , with nearly 300.000 inhabitants, is the second largest city in the Slovak Republic and an important economic, industrial and cultural centre for Eastern Slovakia. It is home of the most important pillars of Slovak industry, namely, US Steel Košice, the Constitutional Court, 5 universities, 4 theatres, 6 museums and a philharmonic. The city is situated near to the frontiers with Hungary (20 km) Ukraine (80 km) and Poland (120 km) and at a distance of about 400 km to the east of Bratislava, the Capital of Slovakia. The city is located in the Košice Basin in the broad valley of the River Hornád, bounded in the west by spurs of the mountains called Slovenské Rudohorie. It covers 244 square kilometres, of which forest accounts for 30,8% and agricultural land 38,1%. The centre of city lies at a height of 208 metres above sea-level. The climate in Košice is mild with an average temperature of 27°C in July and –3°C in January. The location of the city was a significant element of its development. Today the city is characterised by its historical centre surrounded by new housing areas. The city´s grouwth has absorbed formerly independent villages, which still enjoy relative autonomy. The city of Košice is also the seat of the Košice – Region which covers 6 753 square kilometres and is home of 761 000 inhabitants (density of 112 persons per sq. km). The region consists of 11 districts, including 4 districts in the city of Košice and the Košice – countryside district which surrounds the city. The city is situated at the crossroad of transport routes of domestic and international importance. The airport of Košice is located about 6 km from city centre and it is used for passenger and cargo. Connections are available to Bratislava and via Prague in Czech Republic to the main international airports. For the sports oriented, Košice offers various sports such as football, basketball, golf, para-gliding, hockey, judo, mountaineering, and water polo. Night birds can enjoy the many ethnic restaurants and discotheques in town. HISTORY Košice’s rich history as a trading town during the Middle Ages has left it with a multitude of beautiful buildings and monuments, many of which are located on the main street (Hlavná ulica), which was originally a medieval square. There is no historical document reffering to origin of settlement of Košice. But it is evident that the territory was settled much earlier than it is mentioned in the first written document dated from 1143. This document is 5 related to the benedictine Convent in Krásna nad Hornádom The first written reference dates back to the year 1230 when the Hungarian King Andrew resigned. It is supposed that in 1290 was Košice granted the right of autonomy in jurisdiction and the right to built ramparts. Under a privilage granted in 1324, Košice became a free royal city. Emperor Louis I the Great granted Košice a coat of arms, the first city in Europe to receive such a privilege. In 1347 Košice was granted further privilegies which enjoyed till then only the inhabitants of Buda, so that Košice became the second most important town in Hungary. Throughout the whole of the 14 th and 15th centuries Košice was an important name in long-distance trade and one of the largest and richest cities in the whole of Hungary. This was also the period when the city´s most beautiful historic buildings were erected. The first half of the 16th century is related to the battles between Ján Zápoľský and Ferdinand Habsburg and battles with invanding Turks. In the 17 th century uprisings of the estates /Bocskay, Bethlen, Rákoczi, Thököly / as well the religious conflicts influenced negatively the development of the town. This decline of economy didn´t last too long. The development of industry gave to Košice a new impulse especially in form of arising of industrial factories and the construction of the railway line in 1870. In the second half of the 19th century Košice was one of the most industrialized town in Hungary. The most valuable part of the town is the historical core with pedestrian zone along the Main street proclaimed a historical town reserve. Towering over the centre of the main square is the awe-inspiring gothic Cathedral of St. Elizabeth (completed in 1508) the largest gothic cathedral in Slovakia and the only one of its kind in Eastern Europe. This medieval monument was built in the High Gothic style. North of the cathedral stands the neo-baroque State Theatre (Štatne divadlo) built in 1899, and nestled between the two is a fountain which dances to music in the afternoons and evenings. Places to visit in the historical centre: - St. Elisabeth Cathedral - The St.Michal´s Chapel - Singing Fountain Park near the neo-Barogue theatre - Statues known as the Immaculata - Town Hall - Jacab´s Palace - The Universitarian Church - The Dominican Church - The Franciscan Church - The bell called Urban - The Slovak Technical Museum - East Slovakian Museum- with the Košice Golden Treasure-trove 6 - Mikluš Prison Vojtech Löffler´s Museum Museum of Aviation Levoča House Town Ramparts East Slovak Gallery The most attractive exhibition is undoubtedly the Golden Treasure of Košice presenting the collection of coins from 15th to 17th centuries found by accident. With its 2920 coins, 3 medals and a renaissance golden chain it constitutes the second largest treasure of Slovakia. The exhibition on the goldsmith art presents jewelry from the pre-guild period up to the current manufacturing and artshop works representing the most important artistic craft of Slovakia. THE TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY OF KOŠICE The Technical University of Košice (TUKE) was established in 1952, but its history dates back to the Mining Academy in Banská Štiavnica established in 1762 by the Empress Maria Teresia.
