He was trained first in Huazhong University of Science and Technology, and then obtained an MA from UC San Diego in 1995 and a Ph.D. from Stanford University in 1999, with a dissertation on “The Formation of the Resultative Construction and its Effects on the Establishment of Modern Chinese Grammar.” His research has been in the field of Chinese grammar using a variety of new approaches, including cognitive linguistics, grammaticalization theory, and language typology.
